If the holder didn't have an open challenge this would be an important vector to get shots, it's structure, even if it's open challenge to have a way to get shots.

Yeah, and the guys in the match are random. There's no logic to it. It's not like there's 6 viable contenders so you need to have one winner. Plus, the whole pitch for aew is that the show would be about wins and losses and guys earning their way up the card. That has never happened. No one wrestles to work their way into title contention ever. They have random "eliminator" matches and battle royals with random guys.

Not everybody issues open challenges with it. Cody did. When Brodie won the belt he said fuck all that. You don't have to accept every challenger.
