Punk is a virtue signaling jackass who wants everybody's admiration and respect. Page has actually worked in education and directly helped people who needed it and doesn't broadcast it to the world. He also has everyone's respect in the locker room for how humble he is. Like I don't think Punk thinks he's lying, but if you listen to those Colt Cabana podcasts, he's clearly a narcissistic lunatic who remembers things to suit himself and not how they happened (in the space of one argument, he reckons he left a sleazy politician like HHH speechless THREE TIMES ). If you watch his UFC training YT vids you can see he's a complete weirdo who surrounds himself with loser psychophants.

And yet so many wrestling fans seem to think its them and Punk vs the world, as if CM Punk has ANY regard whatsoever for anybody other than himself

You can see how much Jim Cornette empathizes with him and takes his side and point of view, as he does things similar to how Cornette would do them.
Extrapolate that to many more people and the fact is that he's very relatable to a large portion of the audience while also being more like how they wish they themselves could be than how they actually are.
