he tried and failed to do sports entertainment bullshit in AEW, and he refused to do the obvious thing and turn heel, so a face run in WWE was always going to be a smarter choice for him

Tony asked him to go heel and he flatly refused. Brandi also destroyed the women's division and anytime she was on tv it was just pathetic. Tony wanted to keep Cody but not Brandi. So that was it.

Cody would not have stayed for any amount of money. Some people actually love this business and understand, to actually feel accomplished, you have to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship within WWE. Holding that title, AND winning it on the grandest stage of them all, the showcase of the immortals, is where every boyhood dream that entered a kids mind ended. That was the mountain top. That was the pinnacle. Never once did that dream end in any other fed. And if it did, it doesn't matter because those are out of business.
A blank check doesn't buy off a dream kids. Where you all feel ok with being dashingly mediocre, people like Cody were not going to be ok until the dusty rhodes to WrestleMania ended with every kids American Dream

The women's division is still garbage a year later so she didn't have the impact you're suggesting. And Cody wasn't going to waste a babyface WWE title run on going Homelander for AEW's HRT faithful. Homelander works because he's a babyface that the viewer knows is a piece of shit, Cody in AEW was trying to be liked and the crowd hated him for it, going heel so that the crowd likes you again is literally the opposite of Homelander.
