In fairness to Bret, Vince could have chosen anyone other than HBK. I mean, the dude dug up Bob Backlund as a transitional champ a few years before that and they still had him on the roster at that time, one option. The best would have been giving Davey Boy a short run then transition to HBK. Shamrock, Lawler, Owen ... Golddust would have been dimes with the belt for like three months and some buildup with HBK. So many ways to play that, but Vince wanted to go with the one guy Bret wouldn't do the job for.

At the time, I'd say it was close. HBK gets the benefit of the hindsight bias because he was one of Haitch's boys. But Davey Boy was over AF too. Davey jumped ship to WCW about the same time as Bret, but Vince could have tried to sign him and push him for like a year. And Shamrock was really over. There were a lot of options there.
