It's not about who was champion and when. The point is, the bad guy shows up and squashes the hero, who then has to find it in himself to beat the baddie in the rematch.

Like when Overlord squashed and left Super Optimus Prime for dead and Prime would even develop a fear of Overlord, but ultimately, confronts and defeats Overlord (albeit after getting a power up armor and in a tag match).

Again, here I am trying to decipher the truth out of AEW headcanon. I don't watch AEW, but what I know from the situation, Rocky 3's real truth is this:

THAT IS ROCKY III.

Punk was the official champion, Moxley was an "interim" champion who in wrestling is really just the belt warmer until the actual champion is back from injury. Instead of an injured manager, Punk himself was injured, but still being the champ, and having the chance to head to his hometown for the PPV as champ, made him lose the eye of the tiger. Moxley was in a stable entirely about scrappy people who loved fighting and brutality for their own sake at this time.
