It's true, it saved the company but it also stagnated because of HHH putting himself in the main event of Wrestlemania 22, Cena chasing Edge was a huge fucking deal back then, they were doing Attitude Era ratings and by the time WM22 ended they declined gradually. Had Cena won the rumble and beat Edge at Wrestlemania, they could have had another boom period as the ECW invasion was legit right after that.

I like the idea of Punk winning the royal rumble in 2011 and beating Cena with Rock acting as the special referee for the match. They fucked up cena's entire build, he should have lost to jericho at vengeance 2005, then he wins it back at summerslam and loses it again to kurt angle. You have him chase the belt until the chamber, then edge cashes in as soon as he finally wins it. Fans would be pissed, then at the RR have him enter first and do the iron-man job, but at the end edge comes in and screws him out of it allowing orton to win. After all of that, him finally winning the belt at mania would have been insanely satisfiying and fans would finally get behind John Cena
