Previously some of the long reigns were earned in the way that they only remained champion if they consistently drew houses. If attendance went down that person could lose the belt to someone who might draw them back.

But in current day WWE that is not a concern. Roman's reign would extend to 1000 days in all scenarios no matter how many viewers they lost. Because it is being "artificially" extended in this way.

He's right. With Hogan and Sammartino they were organic title reigns that made sense as they went along. With them they didn't decide one day "we're going to put the strap on this guy and no force of man nor God will ever change that or stop us and while we do we'll seek out every single record that can possibly be broken and have him break it." Reigns is the opposite. For some unknown reason, some time in 2014 they made a conscious decision to push Reigns harder than anyone in the history of professional wrestling no matter fucking what. If something legitimately happened to Reigns the company would rage quit and literally close their doors the next day.

Diesel had a year long title reign. Rock had short reigns even when he was the top face. Everything is artificial and subject to whatever story WWE wants to tell

Those reigns are well into the era when it became artificial. Probably Hulk Hogan is the starting point for when title reigns were not based on drawing houses as directly as they had been.
But even in Hulk's day it was important.
Roman himself is probably the most definitive start time for when a champion was absolutely "forced" rather than grew out of organic popularity with the crowd. Cena and Rock had elements of it but it wasn't quite there yet.

There were fanzines and letters to wrestling magazines. And electronic BBS.
And yes, a lot of wrestling fans did use one or more of these. People weren't as clueless and casual as history has revised them to be. Without the internet to distract you all day like today you'd go out of your way to get your hobby fix in other ways. You might discuss wrestling with up to 30 different people you know that go to the same shows in the area and you run into them over and over.
