Can someone explain to me why Roman's fights have to be for both belts?

>Roman still has his WWE Universal Championship, so he can still reach 1000 days as champion

RAW had the WWE Heavyweight championship, the one with the decades-old lineage. Smackdown had the Universal championship, which was created 2016ish when they split the brands again (it was created for RAW initially, but the belts swapped brands due to the title holders switching). Roman won both titles and unified them, so they will refer to him as the WWE Universal Heavyweight champion.

When Jericho won in 2001, the WCW World title and the WWE title were undisputed and the former was retired.

Same thing exact happened when Orton beat Cena in 2013 and the titles were unified.

Just because he has two belts doesn't change anything; there aren't two titles, just one.
