This is literally what I and everyone else thought, that Cody was intentionally becoming more of a sociopath while being unaware that the mask was slipping. Him finally turning heel after losing a throw-away match and cutting a promo like the one Hogan did when he turned would have been actual dimes.

Instead Cody just never turned heel.. Once it became apparent that he legitimately thought what he was doing was solid babyface work and that the mask slipping off was a shoot I realized he was never going to make it anywhere

I think heel Codester is probably the only way I could see long term storytelling with this Bloodline thing potentially being seen as better ending later down the line rather than at Mania just now. However Vince is back so even if that were the plan, it's not happening anymore.

He just didn't seem to get it. He also did this in NJPW and before that in ROH. He just will not commit to a heel role because of a strange messiah complex.
This ironically would make him pretty good as a wrestling villain but because that's his real personality without a hint of irony, it just comes off as cringe and awkward.
