But the promoters always tried to play with where that line was, to get real heat on heels by using real issues. The goal was to get the audience to suspend their disbelief even if only in the moment.
That's the same mentality behind any fiction btw. People generally want to see the good guy in an action movie defeat the bad guys. They know it's fake, but they're invested in the story and believe the characters, and get swept up in the moment. That's the mark of good storytellers. Wrestling used to have that. Now, the wrestlers don't bother to make anything seem real, so of course the fans no longer care who wins or loses, or what the dastardly heel has done. They only care to see spots.
