Austin was never a draw. Yeah, he got lucky with the badass antiauthority gimmick but let's be real - he only got his spot because he was tight with Vince McMahon. Hogan was a bigger star than Austin could ever dream of being, but McMahon wants to remember Austin as the biggest star cos he stuck with the WWF. Hogan and Rock went on to become way bigger celebs outside of the ring and that shows you how much relevance Austin actually had in terms of the mainstream and none of your revisionist history from Vince Mcmahon or from Meltzer is going to convince anyone of this

And Hogan's promo at the time were more directionless and boring then Hunters. No way they'd let Steve get to big. NWO is taking over, but Austin don't trust anybody and sure as hell isn't going to take any shit from washed up Hollywood Hogan or his cronies. Bischoff fired him and surely Austin would have wanted to open up a can of whoop ass on him.
