It's the actual quality of the writers themselves and the standards they were held up to that was the drizzling shits. Lucha Underground is a shining example of how well a competent writing staff can complement wrestling. Old school bookers' limited scope of how far storytelling can go is unfit for a contemporary tv show, and unfortunately it's been proven lately with Heyman's absolutely shitty justification of the WM main event's final result. As much as I absolutely love ECW Hardcore TV, the format must be updated.
On another note, Music and Camera Work (Art direction in general) are some of the main reasons why "casual audiences" are turned off by the main wrestling tv shows. Whoever's in charge must gain taste, and I mean that sincerely.
