Just imagine their 2019 but with the people who joined in the next years. 2020 was bullshit, 2021 was only good during the period between april/May to All out, after that it was a dissapointment, and 2022 was garbage except for Punk and Moxley. AEW doesn't have an army of writers and mid level corporates. Either way this shouldn't surprise anyone, I'd put a lot of money on the idea that Cody had tried to angle himself to become a booker in every promotion he could, he clearly wanted to become a booker for AEW.

Everything from the cruise onward to the pandemic starting was gold, got better in daily's place as the fans were allowed back and then struck gold (even before all the yummy debuts outside of Sting) all the way up until Punk breaks his foot then it's hit or miss.

It wasn't great back then but it felt like it had focus because they made what they could out of a limited roster
They have a much more stacked roster now and the average match quality is higher but most of their storylines are based around endless faction warfare. It's hard to follow, it goes nowhere, and it takes the shine off of anyone who gets over. You really just gotta pick a few guys to focus on rather than trying to charitably include everyone, the latter is a mindset Cody contributed heavily to unfortunately as much as his brain for WCW style wrestling TV was valuable to the company

The best storylines from the initial part of AEW is The Elite drama specifically the Hangman stuff, Mox vs Jericho and Cody vs MJF. We know The Elite have a massive say in what they do, we know Mox and especially Jericho do and we know Cody does. We also know Tony took full control to start out 2020 and the shows got significantly better. I think the huge ass roster is why there's so many factions and I think there's so many factions because that's what NJPW does, easy "this group doesn't like this group" stuff and you can save the "bigger" matches for later if you want.

AEWs first year was objectively its best year.
2021 was its worst, followed by now.
2022 had some decent undercard stuff but a mess at the top.
2020 was hard to watch because all wrestling was hard to watch during the pandemic.
