he didnt entirely fake it. he was thinking about making a comeback throughout 98, seeing if he could rehab his back without surgery, but in late 98 he realised he would have to get back surgery. after the surgery he got depressed and just gave up because he figured he was finished. but he probably could have been back by 2000 if he wasnt busy getting high and being depressed
