The term "mark" originated from carnivals where anyone was a gullible doofus who was easy to make money off of was called a "mark". In pro wrestling this translated to being people who literally thought wrestling was real and try to rush the ring with knives to stab the heels and shit like that. Smark was a term made up for the people who knew everything was fake but still enjoyed the show and was ultimately still able to be worked.
