Probably why Seth went with it initially. As the other anon said though, hyperviolence was big in American media in the second half of the 2000s, and there was a scene in Sopranos where they did in fact call it the curbstomp iirc. You definitely heard normalfags throwing the term around like, "X deserves to be curbstomped" the same way you might here "someone should throw X in a woodchipper" today circa 2008-2009. Frat boys wouldn't shut up about how cool the gore and violence in Inglorious Basterds was that year. I think Gears of War also referenced curbstomping around the same time, but I may be wrong.

It was pretty cool for a while. I wish they'd kept the quality up, I didn't like 2 onward. The time from the 360 launch until Halo 3 finally released was a really fun time. I miss those carefree days of watching wrestling, posting on 4chan (from dialup), and playing gears splitscreen offline with friends.

Thinking about it all like that it really does make sense. When Seth started doing the curb stomp, nobody cared and you were a loser if you were offended, but by the mid-2000s everyone was obsessed with SEO and what came up when you googled things, and by that point "curb stomp" had become synonymous with American History X even if the line is nowhere in the movie. Pre-WWE network, just watching TV, no one cared. So much changed in those short few years.

IIRC Super Dragon was the originator of it because it and obviously took it from American History X. Then other indy guys started doing it. Nova used it I think as a signature during his Simon Dean gimmick but that's because he was always taking moves from indy/puro tapes (his finisher at the time was the Lightning Spiral/Paige Turner).

It was an edit. As someone mentioned, on an MLK Day Raw, Seth beat Big E with the curbstomp so someone took the gif or whatever and inbetween Seth going up and coming down edited in a bunch of civil rights stuff.
