Basically wwe wrestlers used to have lowball contracts compared to guaranteed wcw money BUT they could make more money cuz they would get percentages on house shows, dvds, PPVs, action figures, t shirts, video games, other merch, etc. That's why living the gimmick/having an over catchphrase mattered so much,
But over time as wwe became a big monopoly corporation on the stock exchange, they slowly did away with all those royalty options and now just offer huge downside guarantee contracts. They'll just outbid an AEW (but AEW will give a wrestler more freedom to sell their own merch, work indies, make money on the side)
