-WCW could maybe have benefitted from it, as Hollywood Hogan was starting to get stale by late '97. Also it would have freed up payroll and maybe broken up the main-event logjam so that some of the up-and-comers like Jericho might not have gotten stuck in the midcard to the point of ultimately leaving in frustration.
-It makes less sense for Vince, since the main reason for letting Bret out of his contract was that he was being paid too much, and it's hard to see how Hogan would have settled for much less than Bret was making. Hogan in DX might be one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard, and as it played out, Austin got an even bigger rub from having Vince as a foil than he could possibly have gotten from Hogan.
-For Hogan it makes no sense at all if it means a significant cut in salary and jobbing to Austin. He still had one good Hulkamania run left in him, but the only place where that could happen was WCW (it could have been glorious if Russo hadn't come over from WWF just in time to completely fuck it up).
