Currently watching 1991 wwf and Randy Savage is a commentator now that he lost his career match. Wonder how things would be different if he stayed as a commentator like this. He's pretty great at it

Yes, Randy is an underrated color commentator. I think he could have been one of the all time greats. Savage has a nice little on again, off again run as a commentator, including a stint on Raw for several months.

It's a fun match despite being a 10 minute squash. I liked that at various points the commentator questioned why the match was booked given the weight advantage that Finlay had

Second Bockwinkel match I've seen after the 1hr time limit draw with Curt Hennig, realky good shit. The ability to build so much suspense and excitement using primarily arm and leg locks and actual grappling seems to be to a degree a lost art; there's still guys who can do it but the industry as a whole prioritizes it much less. Rewatching an El Desperado vs Robbie Eagles match from 2021 I did see some of the same type of work; it felt like it belonged in the lineage of Bockwinkel, Thesz, etc. moreso than most stuff I see in North America.

Love the /OSG/. I'm currently watching any and all territory TVs I can get my hands on from the Summer of '82 and man, the little details are so cool to see. Ken Patera was wrestling some jobber on Wrestling at the Chase and he pulled his opponent to the ground by his trunks while in an armlock. That little move gave the otherwise standard squash so much character and it put over Patera as a definitive heel. Sucks that character-centric wrestling like that seems to be a lost art nowadays.

I agree. I hate when modern wrestlers do those same choreographed sequences where each take turn doing pins and head scissors, but instantly releasing them. Some may think i'm crazy, but i think there are few things as exciting as a well worked escape from a head scissors
If you like matches worked mostly around holds, then here are some must-see matches:
-Inoki Vs Billy Robinson (11-12-1975)
-Inoki Vs Jack Brisco
-The Funk Brothers Vs Billy Robinson and Horst Hoffman

Real workers can make squash matches fun. Guys like Tully blanchard, Buddy landel, The midnight, and The rock n' roll proved their control of fundamentals every week on TV

I agree wholeheartedly. There was a great match I saw on Mid-Atlantic TV, where Jack Brisco, with an injured knee, took on Muraco. Fantastic psychology with Brisco destroying Muraco's arm and trying to keep him down in holds, but Muraco always managed to exploit the knee by kicking it or something in order to keep escaping. With Piper on commentary as well, it was awesome stuff. Jack Brisco doesn't get the praise he deserves for his technical soundness.

Oh, i know who Sakuraba is. I just didn't recognize him with the mario moustache. His feud with the Gracies is some of the closest MMA has been to pro-wrestling.

I agree, I have seen the Inoki Robinson match and the good four minutes of Robinson trying to escape the headscissors is worth more than the Young Bucks' entire career. I'll check out the other two matches as well, thanks! My knowledge of classic New Japan is still pretty basic but I'm looking forward to going deeper into the Inoki rabbit hole.
