But in terms of industry prominence, Bret Hart was the WWF champion, which was the biggest wrestling promotion. NJPW is nowhere near the prominence of WWE. Bret Hart was a well known personality, appearing in guest spots on TV such as on The Simpsons. Jay White is virtually unknown in the US. Bret Hart was coming off the hottest angle in wrestling, the Montreal Screwjob, arguably the hottest angle of all time. Jay White... was in some irrelevant angles no one outside diehard fans are talking about. And lastly, WCW was engaged in a ratings war with WWF, which they were neck and neck in early 1998, and Bret might have kept WCW on top. Meanwhile, AEW is nowhere near competing with WWE, nor could any reasonable person expect Jay White to be the man to put AEW on top of the wrestling industry.
