Putting technical wrestling in the main event was a mistake and made smarks think workrate was important to being a main eventer

Austin vs Rock, Hogan vs Vince or Booker vs HHH should have main evented instead

Hurt Ankle is not a "technical wrestler", his matches do not have "high workrate", everyone calls conspiracy that Kurt has never had a match rated 5 stars while themselves peddling a narrative about his greatness that isn't at all borne out by the reality. You mean Benoit? Benoit was the GOAT technical wrestler. Angle however has admitted to being a spot monkey early on in his career. By 2006 he was on his peak, the match with Carder is in my all-time top 5.

The Ruthless Aggression era was the first era since New Generation where they were putting emphasis on workrate or technical wrestling mixed with Attitude era esque storyline vibes. They were trying something different... but yes, Rock vs Austin should've main evented. As good as this Mania was the build was poorly down. There was hardly any hype for it whatsoever, and for that the show suffered in buy rates.

They were going to, but Austin turned the offer down. He was in very bad shape, and didn't feel he could live up to his standards of a PPV main event.

Horrific ending aside, Angle/Lesnar was an excellent main event. Anybody who thinks the disastrous Hunter/Booker feud should've main evented should be whipped in the nuts with a title belt.

No he wasn't, and in fact they both wrestle nigh identically. Their movesets are just as small as anyone else's.
This is the guy whose signature move is the 2nd most basic wrestling maneuver in the industry done three times in succession.

technical wrestling has been conflated with mat and amateur wrestling, with stuff you'd see in an olympic contest or high school gym

what it really means is closer to having and executing a large variety and diversity of techniques; 5 moves of doomers are not technical wrestlers---that is half of what is meant when someone says a wrestler "wrestles the same match everytime"

high workrate is, leaving aside the believability and success of the moves attempted/executed, when a performer utilizes a vast repertoire of moves within fast to brisk match-pacing

by this metric, neither Kurt nor Chris qualify, though few do

The storyline for this match was so fucking stupid. The story should've had Lesnar stay heel dominating going in, and Angle, the olympic gold medalist, challenging him as the babyface and outwrestling the monster.

Instead, they tried to make Lesnar top face and he was so totally void of charisma that they reversed the roles back to babyface Angle vs heel Lesnar within months (and had better matches, too).

Braindead program. Hogan vs Vince should've main evented.

Austin/Rock was supposed to be the main event but they switched it out because Austin was in the hospital the day before the show, they weren't sure if he'd be able to go or not. That doesn't mean retarded marks thinking some random arbitrary decision led to the downfall of wrestling isn't embarrassing though.

Contributing factor, but it was also just not that appealing on paper. The biggest draw going in was Hogan vs Vince, and even that lacked the novelty of Hogan vs Rock. Rock/Austin had already been done twice and neither were the characters they had been since the Attitude Era was dead by this point.

"People having trouble ordering it" is a "Jamie Kellner killed WCW" tier excuse. Yes, that was a thing, but there were bigger quality issues surrounding it.

Problem with keeping Lesnar as an undefeated heel champ going into Mania 19 is that if they stuck with Angle as the babyface challenger, then the story would have been fucked once Angle's neck problems flared up 2 weeks before the show.

Neither Benoit or Eddie were ready for that babyface push in April 2003

I don't think injury is really the factor between the two, considering the feuded all throughout that summer. Of course, that's also ironic considering how the match ended.

WrestleMania main events should always be about the story going in, and it should be treated as Act 3 of a 3 act story. It's the end of the story. WrestleMania is about making history moreso than anything else and the only historical thing to come out of that was the botched SSP (which was awesome and could've been done even if Angle was the babyface).

And, as pointed out, they reverted back to face Angle vs heel Lesnar within months of the match anyway and it revealed itself to be the better dynamic for those two anyway.

2003 Babyface Lesnar was a failed experiment, and time proves that.
