"Illya, lets talk shop" You say, keeping alert and scanning the Landing Zone's perimeter
"About what, Sir?" She asks immediately, pausing her own watch to glance your direction to acknowledge your request. Which was important, as you hadn't ordered her to give her two cents
"The Covenant Elite Soldier Caste" You tell her and she nods, understanding that you want to have a tactical discussion
"We call them Svartalfar" Shika chimes in "Sven came up with it"
"So that's why the operation was called that" Illya ponders outload "Kurt and the rest of us took to calling them Alligators, Svartalfar is a bit of a mouthful"
"So is Alligator, in all fairness" Nesta butts in, running her hands through her red hair and shaking it as she enjoys the sun and the breeze washing up from the shore.

We did everything needed. Next what ? Especially when this fleet of Sublime Deception will be utterly furious we shitted upon their long term scheme and destroyed an holy temple.

Though i am surprised High Command would even think of sending us here again the place is going to be nuked, and filled by enraged aliens.

They don't detect either of you as you enter the perimeter, and only notice you've reached the center of their camp when Jorge, Anton and Cal straighten up, stand at attention and salute you. "At ease, Spartans" You bark, and the officer in your posture and tone gets a few of the more wet around the ears Marines to drop their rifles and follow suit, saluting as their guns hang by their straps. The more experienced, or at least more suspicious soldiers keep their rifles in hand, lowered as they realize the infiltrator amongst their ranks is the CO on the ground. "Jesus, and I thought five two was big, where'd they grow him" rises from the circle of marines guarding the perimeter, you can't tell who said it, but they had a noticeable accent. Must've been an outer colonist fresh from training, probably not much older than you or any of the other Spartans "Are these all that's left of the Einherjar groundside?" You ask, moving on briskly and approaching the disarmed and de-masked Einherjar kneeling on the ground, under Anton and Cal's watch and supervision. The apparent leader of the captives shoots a defiant glare up at you, and moves to spit. Jorge has him on the ground before he can even purse his lips. "Besides your missing group in the ruins, sir?" Jorge answers, and you nod, as they are a problem that will soon be solved with nuclear hellfire and thus could safely be cut out of the equation and considered no longer a risk for leaking information to the Covenant "Yes, we've confirmed that we've killed or captured every enemy combatant on the planet" "Fine work, Spartans" You say, before pausing and turning around to face the Marines, several of whom straighten up and try to pretend like they weren't chewing the fat behind your back or gossiping about you, mostly about your sheer size "And, that goes for you marines as well. Takes more than most soldiers have just to match our pace, and we appreciate the assistance. But, best to be thorough" "We've got flight and crew logs as proof that these are the last of the enemy forces, Sven" Jorge answers your unspoken question, to your satisfaction as the Einherjar under his boot grinds his teeth red from frustration, the pressure on his back keeping him from speaking or doing anything besides looking up at you with contempt smoldering in his eyes. At least, the one that isn't swelled shut from a bruise that you're guessing came from a lucky ricochet against the metal masks Einherjar wear into combat. "And before you ask, we've secured their transport and gear as well. Leave no trace to be found by" Anton adds as he steps forward "We're ready to evac at any moment Lieutenant" Cont

Excellent, that's the last delay out of the way" You compliment as you wave your hand and motion towards the dropships "I want these Pelicans loaded and ready for take off within the next half hour!"
The highest ranked Marine nodded and repeated your orders to the soldiers under their command, and they immediately went to work, packing and loading the dropships, leaving not even a single stray shell of ammunition behind. And, you noticed as you helped lift the heavier equipment onto the Pelican sent by and heading back to the Lawrence of Arabia, that the Marines had suffered a few causalities and injuries during the jungle op. But that was to be expected. Einherjar were elite & expert fighters, even if they were suicidal extremists. They'd have taken more if they hadn't had three Spartans leading the mission.
You'd ride one of the dropships back to the Lawrence of Arabia, and take a shuttle over to the Skidbladnir. From there, the Prowlers would leave the system as quickly as possible. The Covenant could arrive in system at any moment, the last known heading of the fleet had placed this planet in the dead center of their projected route. And a handful of Prowlers had no chance to escape a Covenant Fleet, let alone fight it.
Fortunately. They don't have to. All four Prowlers successfully enter slipspace without issue or sign of the Covenant. You're confident they'll show up in the star system eventually, sooner rather than later. But for now, you hold your head high, knowing that the fast response and quick execution of your plans are what allowed you to keep your temporary wolfpack from meeting that overwhelming force.
From orbit, just before the Skidbladnir leaves it to travel outside of the local Star's gravity well, you take a moment to roughly sketch the planet and the small, black pin prick of a scar left by the nuclear device planted on the ruins. Almost unconsciously, your pen writes out a stray observation. "Who knows how much knowledge was lost with that bomb?"
You think about crumbling and incinerating the page, but leave it in, continuing to sketch the sigils you remember from the ruins along with the few meanings you know alongside rough sketches of the artifacts and technology you'd seen. You spend the most time on a a few rough sketches, theorizing at the use of the "Big Gun" and what sort of war and enemy needed that kind of a weapon.

>Look into the ruin's energy signatures picked up by the prowlers I do like this write in. Get our more scientifically inclined brothers and sisters together to really get the details down. One in a million chances of ever seeing another place like this is low odds, but in a galaxy of countless worlds it's definitely not zero.
I would vote to share with Daisy or some others but there's really not much talking to them could do. We already have Shika to talk to it about and wax about the finer details of how it did what it did, but Daisy doesn't have a medical or technological inclination to suppose about the causes and effects. Most Spartans don't. If we ever come across more ruins it'd be pertinent to tell whoever is with us just in case though, naturally.
As for the secret objectives, I'm guessing one is "Must've been the wind" in which we got in and out without the Covie ever even getting close enough to smell the gunpowder. Because it's funny and I want it to exist for that reason kek. And the next is probably acquiring significant data and readings on Forerunner facilities.

>>6336031 >feel bad for constantly voting for everything that can be shoved into a single update. I do get the sentiment but sometimes its not about that. Some of this options feel worringly has something, we cannot really just let go. Its something we need to do. Even if we need to stop the proverbial train for do so. Or outright take off the rails.
The clock is always clicking for next mission to arrive. Dragging our feet for do some of this things though....is important. This is not a situation about doing everything. This is about slowing down, since we can in this moment thanks to the victory and discoveries, so what needs to be done is done.
>>6336029 Daisy is not only a worrier, she is a close Purple Team member. One of the closest spartans to us much like Nesta, Shika, James and Jorge. Letting the current thoughts in her head develop after what she has seen us do would not help the team or her. Its not the right message to send to the ones we hold close to us. She would fear for us (reasonably) going in similar ruins again. And it would be difficult for the rest of Purple Team, and say even Rita or Soren to tell her "they will make sure it will not happen to Sven again", and convince Daisy. And why is that ? Because Sven didn't said a word or just said he was "fine", while using his rank for mask what was happening to him or stop more questions.
We have to remember Sven is not telling yet the fact he splattered the inside of his helmet and HUD with his blood. He did not take off his helmet in the ruins or afterwards, because he knew it wouldn't reassure at all (reasonably) Shika, Daisy and Naomi. If Sven does not talk about this, and takes off his helmet ? That will not help.
