"We should keep moving and catch up to the NPC. My transformation only lasts a minute and we should make the most of it." You say motioning to the next cave entrance. Ryuji nods and tears his glaive free from the zombie just as Irene finishes her trance. The three of you regroup and begin to run through the cave system once more, all pretense of stealth lost. Not helping was the fact that Ryuji was constantly gushing and asking questions about your abilities. "What else can you do? How long is the cooldown? What buffs do you get? Did the coat come with the costume?" He asks, eagerness overtaking any sense of restraint on his curiosity. "I don't know anyone who's ever gotten this far!" He concludes. You suppress a small sigh building up. You had expected him to explode with excitement given his love of the game but you hadn't really expected to see him get this excited. Still, you couldn't help but share a bit of his enthusiasm. How long had it been since you had eagerly spoken about the game with someone just as passionate instead of trying to avoid the conversation with non-answers? You pull back your helm, allowing it to fold back behind your head and somehow vanish causing Ryuji to let out a noise that sounded like a mix between a squeal and roar of excitement. "It folds back..." He manages to eek out. "It's on a 5 minute cooldown. So it's really more of a boss fight kind of ability though right now I don't think we have the luxury to hold back big CDs. While I'm in this form, these are considered two handed weapons." You say raising your fists. Ryuji's jaw drops. "Waitwaitwait. You're dealing two hander damage with your fists alone? I've seen how fast you can swing those things and you're telling me they can hit as hard as a warhammer?" He asks. "Yup. Only while transformed though. Untransformed I have the Brawler's [Powerful Fist] skill but it seems to scale better because I can't really wield anything else." You continue. "Also, I'm considered to be wearing light armored outside of my transformation and medium while transformed. Stacks with the bit of damage reduction my class gives. Class seems to give me a handful of abilities from other classes to pick from on level up but it seems to lean towards fighter and brawler skills." You pause for a moment. "But I get this feeling that there's more to it. Almost like the game is keeping note of what I do and adjusting for it. I got a weird quest regarding another player on the tutorial island and now I'm expected to grow under strife, whatever that means. For the moment it seems my class progression is locked until I meet some kind of requirement. Nothing about this class is straight forward and the power seems to compensate for it." You say, drawing your helmet back on. "If I'm honest...that's the fun part."

You eat for a moment longer. "It'd mean alot to me if you did come." You say upfront. You didn't think it fair to beat around the bush or try and be sneaky if you were going to play the son card. "I can introduce you to everyone. Roland's a good guy. A bit loud but he's a good guy inside and out. And you'd like Gloria, she's always willing to listen and has words of advice not to mention she's a trained chef. Worked in Korea and everything." A small smile plays on your mom's face. "And this Gloria...does she have a boyfriend?" She asks, deflecting. You don't fall for the bait. "You could ask her that when we go to the potluck." You redirect with a grin. "I'm sure she'd be happy to tell you all about it. Assuming you run out of embarrassing baby stories to tell of course." Your mom gives you a half amused look before her face softens a bit. "Sweetie..." She begins. "Mom, please." You insist. "Just this once. You don't have to make anything. I'll make a dish to take. Just come with me and I'll show you around the place. Roland even has spare bedrooms and a great employee lounge you can hang out in if you don't feel comfortable. Heck, I bet he'd even offer to drive us home if it doesn't work out." You set your utensils down. "I think...it'd be a good time and it really would mean a lot to me." You repeat. Your mom looks conflicted and she chews her lip for a moment. "A-alright dear. If it would make you happy..." She says quietly and you feel a pang of guilt. "It would mom. Not just because you're coming with me." You say getting up to clear the table. You place the dishes in the sink and place a reassuring hand on your mom's shoulder. "It'll be a good time. I promise." You reassure her quietly before speaking up and adding, "Why don't you go and relax? I'll wash up the dishes." Your mom immediately stands up. "Oh no, I can't make you-" She starts. "Too late." You say with a smile as you turn the water on. "The food was to celebrate, but now I have to pay you back for the meal. Dishes are on me." Your mom gives you a weary smile and relents. "Sometimes, it's like your a different person." She says. "No, it's just me. Taking it one step at a time."

You hope that the get together would help your mom. She didn't really leave the house anymore and as guilty as you felt for asking her to do it to make your happy, you think it would be good for her. You make a mental note to let Roland know. Maybe he or Gloria would have a plan to make it less overwhelming for your mom. You sit at your desk and your eyes linger on the cigar box. You lean forward and open it to pull the tickets out again. "One step at a time, dad." You mutter, looking at them. "I'll get things done. Just like you taught me." You carefully place the tickets back into the box and boot up your computer. With food in your belly and your nerves somewhat settled you feel a bit better getting back online. You open up the companion program and send Serena a message. <span class="mu-g"> [Regal_20] Are you free? I just finished up my exams and have some free time right now. Your special weapon proficiency ability is the exception to the rule at the moment. Other exceptions may come up such as when you were using your other form while supercharged with dragon magic
or depending on the driver if you find a way to get another one . At most you may wear minor things such as vambraces but they will not increase your defense nor reduce damage when blocking with them. It'll just be a cosmetic thing. When you had access to your transformation ability, you were considered to be wearing light armor in your civilian form and medium when transformed. Without your driver, you lost access to that. However, you still have access to your ability to be proficient with any weapon you grab for a single attack.

You head toward the usual workshop. With a bit of time to burn, you figure you could build something else. Anything to try and shore up your lack of power. However when you arrive you find the shop barren. The doors have been barred shut and the windows were boarded up. You stare for a moment before tying to peek through the gaps in the windows. It was completely empty with not a single machine or workbench left inside. Your frown. The shop was almost always busy with players and that was only a few days ago. There was no way it could have gone under financially. Searching around the area didn't reveal any kind of notice or sign of what could have happened. The building was old but still serviceable so it couldn't have been an attack or accident. The guilds had no reason to run them out either. The lack of public crafting stations would only drive people away and thus ruining the economy and any potential recruits. You ponder the thought for a moment before moving on. It might be something to look into later but right now you had a time limit and you wanted to make the most of it. --- The grapple gun was slightly more annoying to assemble than the igniter. At least that's how you tried to undersell the fact that it too you far longer to make than the igniter. At the size and shape of a regular lighter, all the pieces were far smaller than anything you're used to. Just trying to coil up all 50ft of wire into such a small space made you worry it would explode and take your eye out. The finished product was well worth it though. You pull the lid open and a small grapple hook the thickness of a ballpoint pen pops out, it's hooks snapping out, and locks in place, ready to fire. One of the sides of the "lighter" slides in slightly and clicks into place to act as the trigger for you to squeeze. You close the lid and everything slides back into place returning to it's regular shape. Because of how well things were cut, it was almost impossible to deduce what the device was from a distance. You modified your belt to be able to attach the gun to it and free up your hands as well as hide it as a belt buckle. There was also a small but powerful magnet inside it, another feature that gave you a lot of trouble, which could allow you to attach the device to an object before or after firing it. You snap the device onto your belt, feeling pleased. This was going to open up a lot more mobility options now that you could no longer jump all over the place. <span class="mu-b">Item acquired. ---- The echoing sounds of fighting can be heard as you get closer to the arena. Despite the sounds, they didn't reflect any real fighting. Peaking over the walls of the arena would show no live fights nor would peeking through it's windows with binoculars or a scope. If a person wanted to spectate a fight then they would need to speak to an npc. The player would then be transported to an instance of the stands with others and project a copy of one of the matches going on within the fighting space. There were even vendors selling food and drink for the spectators. Some players even set up gambling pools though those were always a risk. Nevermore had no official betting system and so anyone wanting to gamble would need to trust their money in a broker or trust everyone else to pay up when the time came. It wasn't uncommon for people to be ripped off, complain in the forums, and get laughed right out. You enter the large building and approach the pair of NPCs that handled sign ups. "Hello! Welcome to the Arena! Here you can test your mettle against the best of the best or you can choose to open your own room and spar with friends. What would you like to do today?" A woman wearing generic gladiator armor says with a bright smile. She holds out a sheet of parchment and you get a small pop up for you to choose. "I'd like to open a private lobby. Here's the details." You say as you write up the room's information. The woman takes the paper and goes over it. She pauses for a moment. "Please give me one moment." She says as she takes the paper and walks through a door behind her. A moment later, she returns with an ornate key in her hand. "Sorry for the wait, sir." She says, her tone now that of a consummate professional. "We had to verify a few details. If you would please follow me, I will show you to your room." You raise an eyebrow. You don't remember being led to your room before. Normally the game would simply load you in. Maybe this was an update. You follow the woman down to a door slightly off to the side. She slides the key into the lock and opens it for you. "Your room. Please enjoy your time here, sir." She says motioning for you to enter. You try to peek through the doorway but all you see is the infinite blackness of a room that isn't being rendered. You cautiously step forward and through the threshold. Then the room immediately loads. You stand in a regal looking parlor room illuminated by chandelier and various candles littered around. A beautiful oak table stands at the center of the room surrounded by couches and some comfortable chairs. Atop is a beautiful tea set that seems to be made of crystal that's refracting light into dozens of colors onto the table. A cozy song plays lightly as if form a nearby piano but before you can look around you hear the sound of a clap. You turn around, ready for a fight, to see an older gentleman in a butler uniform his hands returning to his sides after the clap. "Everyone! The young master has arrived!" He announces in a even, regal tone. Half a dozen other npcs, each in servants outfits appear from several doors around the room. Each one stands behind the older man and genuflects in deference to you. The older man places an arm behind his back and in front of him before bowing politely. "Welcome to your lobby, master." He says in a professional tone. "Thanks...?" You say unsure of what to say. You never had a servant before in a VR game let alone real life so you were a bit out of your depth. The older man doesn't miss a beat. "Judging by the look on your face, it seems you were unaware of our services young master." He says. "Our organization has trained us to serve people of high renown. Our services are exclusive to you and we cover many fields from tending to your armor to tending to your estate. I must regretfully inform you, however, that though our services have been paid in full in regards to serving you our budget does not include the materials required for our other services." He snaps his fingers and a young woman in a maid outfit hurries over to you and hands you a pamphlet. "The finer details will be found here, sir." He says as a popup appears on your HUD.

"Can you set up the forest stage please?" You ask handing back the set of papers. It sort of felt like ordering a meal and you just couldn't help but be polite about it. Were you allowed to be casual with servants? They seemed polite so it only felt right to return the favor even if they were both fake and there to serve you. The older butler nods and hands the forms to another servant. They bow slightly and hurry off, presumably to let the arena staff know what stage you wanted. "Would you like to enter the stage now or will you be waiting for your guests, young master?" He asks patiently. "I'm going to wait. I don't think it'd be fair if I have time to get ready." You say just as the younger butler returns with a platter full of mini sandwiches and another full of cut fruit. Both were precisely cut and stacked that you're amazed it was done so quickly. The bread is nice and fluffy with no indication of any moisture from the ingredients held between. The fruit has a slight shine from how juicy and freshly cut it is. A maid arrives with a large teapot in hand. She pours you a piping hot cup of tea in the fine crystal cup. It immediately fogs up before being filled by the drink though steam still lazily flows out of the liquid. The head butler gives you a slight nod. "A wise assessment, young master." He says flicking a cloth that you never saw him grab and placing it on your lap. There is a chime in the air, almost like a medieval version of a doorbell, and the elder butler bows to you before briskly walking to the door you entered from. He opens it and stands at attention before announcing, "Introducing Lady Starlight of Rising Dragons!" Serena steps through the doorway looking quite bewildered. She gives a polite nod to the butler but politely declines handing over her weapon when another servant offers to take it from her. Surprisingly, she didn't seem as awkward around them as you expected her to be. On top of that, you note that her steps are now more assured than you remembered them to be. You suspect constantly fighting other players in the arena and out in the woods might have had something to do with that. However, she doesn't seem to have any new gear. She's wearing the exact thing she wore when you first met her. "Hey, you made it. Want a snack?" You say putting down your tea and motioning for the platters. She pulls her awed gaze away from the surroundings and looks at you. "I've never been in a lobby like this before." She admits as she moves to sit in one of the couches to the left of you. By the time she sits, a maid had already set a plate and cup full of tea before her. You laugh and take another sip. "Yeah, me either." You say with a slight gasp as you try to cool your throat. "Apparently its like a loyalty reward for old accounts. Didn't even know it was a thing until now." You admit. Serena nods as she delicately grabs a bit of fruit.

You say with slight confusion. Serena sips her tea and shakes her head. "I don't know the specifics but we're not making a lot of money right now. A lot of it is being spent maintaining some outposts to fend of the elves." She lets out a weary sigh. "And now that this new guild Crimson Glory attacking us at every opportunity, we're spending more money to fix things." "You don't know Crimson Glory?" You ask and Serena shakes her head. "Not really. One of my guild mates says they're our rivals and they're mad at us for winning a big tournament but not much other than that. I haven't really gotten too into that kind of stuff outside the game." She admits grabbing a sandwich. "But it must be important because we can't get quests done or fight monsters. They either attack our groups out in the world or steal our kills and turn in the quests for the rewards. It's harming our reputation with our home city." She raises an arm to show you her gear. "It's why I'm in this. The patrol I was in got attacked by them when we got ambushed by an elven party. I lost all my other gear. If it wasn't for you, I'd have lost my staff as well." "It was nothing. I just didn't want anyone ruining the game for you." You say. Serena shakes her head. "It wasn't just nothing. You helped me clear the dungeon just the two of us. I've done a few with a party and it was mess. Doing it with a new player must mean you're really good at the game." She insists. "More importantly, you didn't even ask for anything." You couldn't really argue with that so instead you buy some time by taking a bite of a sandwich. >What do you say? >Say that you just used to play the game so you have a bit of experience. Nothing crazy though. >Say that the two of you got quite lucky. Even if a secret boss appearing could have cost you the run. >Try and deflect by asking Serena a question. (What do you ask her?) >Just agree with her and offer to go into the arena for practice. >Write in.

>>6354990 >There's hardly anything I could ask from you at the time. Maybe soon we could trade region-exclusive loot, that's plenty more useful for the both of us. >We've actually been considering a kind of mentoring guild, just finding new players who look like they could shine with a bit of experience. Not with secret bosses though, at some point that'll be bad for my heart. Anonymous

"Like I said, I just played the game a lot in the past. It's no big deal. I'm just used to how fights can play out." You say trying to sound casual. "But I am working with a few friends to make a kind of mentoring guild. Just looking for new players who look like they could shine with a bit of experience. Though not so much with secret bosses. I'm not sure it'll be good for my heart if I constantly have to do them." You chuckle setting your cup of tea down only to have it immediately refilled by a nearby servant. "That sounds nice. This game does seem like it can be a little overwhelming. Just getting used to moving so fast feels a little weird." Serena says waving her hand a bit. "Sometimes if I actively think about it, it feels like I'm floating and light." "Yeah, I wouldn't do that if I were you. It'll throw your sense of balance off. Kind of like when they do the trick where they remind you about something you do automatically. Your brain starts to be conscious of you doing it. Best if you just move and flow with the game." You say grabbing a slice of orange. "Of course, don't make the mistake of thinking the game is giving you extra skill. It handles your strength and dexterity so you can manage the weapons you find but the fighting? That's pure skill. It's why some people look up video tutorials on sword techniques or others incorporate real world fighting styles. Most people make do with swinging or shooting wildly but the real top percent of players practice inside and out of the game. I remember a few who made up their own martial arts using the game's physics to make up for how impossible it would be in the real world. Those are the ones you need to keep an eye out. Never know when someone might find a crazy unconventional style to throw you off your game." You start before you catch yourself lecturing again rambling again. "A-anyways, it's stuff like that we're probably gonna focus on in the guild. That any just helping people have fun with the game in their own way. We already have someone who doesn't have an interest in the game beyond just cooking and we think that's cool enough to invite them." "Most guilds seem more interested in PvP and getting big numbers it seems. Your idea is unique." Serena admits. "I'm sure there's plenty of role playing and alternative guilds out there. Might need to search the net for them but they're out there. You're right though, Nevermore made a big splash in the esports scene so most guilds want to emulate their favorite teams. It's probably one of the biggest attractions to the game." You say. "But there's always groups of people who find other ways of enjoying the game." "What about...evil guilds?" Serena asks with curiosity. You blink in confusion. "Evil...guilds?" You repeat. Serena nods. "Like, guilds that just want to kill other players or npcs." She explains. "Or like...join the bad guys." You consider it for a moment.

They would have to convince the bad guys to let them join but I suppose nothing is stopping them from trying. Or at the very least helping along their plans by sabotaging everyone else." You admit as you stroke your chin in thought. "Why? Thinking of Crimson Glory?" You ask with a grin. "No...it's just..." Serena starts but trails off. "Just what?" "Some of the other patrols mentioned that they were killed by a player not with Crimson Glory. But they were in an area known for being deep in the elven territory. I don't know how else a person could survive there if they weren't teaming up with the elves." She admits. "So I was hoping you'd know...I mean if you don't mind helping another guild. I don't know if that impolite or something." You shake your head. "Not really. I mean the big pro guilds won't team up unless absolutely necessary but most guilds probably won't care. Me? I'm a strictly neutral player. So I don't particularly care either way." You think for a moment. "It's possible that they did team up with them but it's equally likely they can slip in and out unnoticed. Plenty of classes have the ability to enhance their stealth but I guess any player can do it normally." You think for a moment longer. "Wait- did you say one person did this?" You ask. Before Serena can answer the elder butler speaks up. "My apologies, young master but it seems like your arena has been prepared. Unfortunately, as this is a lobby and not your property we can't have you loitering for too long without using the facilities. If you could please step through these doors.." He says motioning to a pair of doors.>What do you do? >Cancel the fight and ask Serena more about this player. >Head through the doors and have a spar. You can ask about the player a bit more. >Ask Serena if she can send you the coordinates of the last known sighting of this player after your matches. You want to go check it out with Roland and the others. Maybe even bring Serena along. >Write in.

We can chat about it later, byt desu if we want to stay neutral in big guild politics, and are in favour fof everyone enjoying the game in their own way, I'm not sure it makes sense to interfere with peeps who want to RP as an elven assassin.
