A soft quiet hangs over the forest as you run through the underbrush. Compared to the lobby, it felt like a heavy blanket was draped over the arena and muffled everything outside. You do your best to not break the silence with your movement as you hurry through the forest. Spawns in an arena match are static but there were a few different locations where one could be spawned in. The limited amount of spawn points meant that anyone could narrow down the location of their opponent by heading over to them and seeing if they were there. That was, of course, assuming that their opponent hadn't moved in the interim. With how defenseless you were right now, you were sure that one or two direct hits from a simple spell would be disastrous. Not to mention her aim was far better than any newbie you ever saw. It would be best not to underestimate her, especially now that she had practice. You slide behind a fallen log and go prone. You strain your ears for any sound of your opponent but the silence persists. You needed to formulate a strategy. The set up of your fight was quite simple, each of you had 3 healing potions and 3 mana potions. Not too egregious but enough to give each other a pick me up in case of a bad hit. You're not sure how well you'd be able to utilize the mana potions at the moment but the healing potions could come in handy in a pinch. You also had your ability to cheat death once per real world day. It was an ability that Serena didn't know about and you weren't really sure you wanted to use for a simple spar. Lifting up your coat, you make sure that your canister of fuel on your hip was locked in and ready to use. A quick adjustment of the wrist and the nozzle for your igniter, a miniaturized flamethrower, pops up and ready to use. You only had about 5 shots with a single can unless you decided to empty it completely for a large wall of fire. Finally, you reach down and pop off the small buckle on your belt. You flick the small lid off of the fake lighter and see the tiny grapple hook pop out, ready to fire and zip you towards your target or pull something towards you if it was light enough. These were just two of the gadgets you had built in what you hoped would be a small arsenal of tricks you could use. Even so, you weren't sure how well they could carry you now that you were playing a class without features.

Roland and Gloria share a look. "What?" You ask, confused. "Listen man, I dunno if that's a good idea." Roland says, rubbing the back of his neck. "You don't really have...the best track record when it comes to staying out of trouble." He adds with an apologetic look. "Hey, it was the one time!" You protest. "You ran into two secret bosses with an undersized party, got cursed with a magic artifact along the way, and now want to antagonize the server." Gloria points out. "Well...that's not really how I'd put it...and besides we got out of it ok." You say sheepishly. "You also don't have your transformation item either because you sacrificed it." Roland continues with a smirk. "Ok, fair but I'm sure there's another way to get it back..." You try and counter. "And finally, you're stuck in the city with the most dragon magic detection in the game probably." Gloria concludes. "Alright, alright. I get it." You say waving for them to spot. "So what do we do then?" You ask. Your friends share another look. "Oh, you should definitely be the one hiding." Gloria says. "Yeah. We don't want your bad luck to get to us while we're looking for the inquisitor." Roland laughs. "Maybe it was a good plan after all. Goes to show that you really know this game inside out." You sigh and throw your hands up in the air. "I'm starting to wonder if you two are right and getting back into the game was just another stroke of bad luck." You say with a half chuckle. "So we're in agreement then? I'll hold onto the item and hide while you two go find Eleanor." "Yeah, we'll find her and try to do it before something else comes up." Roland assures you. "Then we can meet up with the newbie you invited." "We can all meet up near the airship docks." You say. "It'd be the fastest way for her to get here and from there we can leave the city." "That works. So we'll grab the Inquisitor, get you, then head to the docks." Roland summarizes. Inside a building is better than trying to hide outside. Plus it's in the market district right? There's gonna be plenty of people wandering around to throw a wrench in whatever scanning magics the guards can have." Roland says, nodding in agreement. "Of course, that is if you can survive your tailor's reaction when he finds out how you treated his clothing." Gloria snickers. She moves behind the station you had helped her set up. You hear a click and the faint whoosh of fire coming to life. Roland immediately perks up at that. "No. I'm just cleaning. Heating up helps break up any lingering oils." She says with a smile. Roland deflates after that. "Come on. Just a taste? You gotta give us a sample of what you're gonna serve. You know...for testing quality." Roland urges. "You're skirting a line there Roland." Gloria says waving a nearby frying basket menacingly. "I'll have you know that my food is of great quality regardless of station or ingredient." "Didn't you say that you were using the potluck for testing purposes though?" You joke and get your turn at having the basket being waved at you. "I said I was testing interest, not flavor." She corrects you. "Now, if either of you want a snack then you better behave." Roland grins and you and gives you a thumbs up. You just chuckle and stretch a bit. "Not to mention, I need to make sure that uhh...enough snacks are made." He says glancing over at Gloria who was scrubbing down her things with a smirk on her face. "No problem boss. I'll be sure to hold the fort down when we inevitably need more ingredients." You laugh as you step through the door into the kitchen and the cafe. --->Later... You twist open a bottle of water and sit down at the front desk with a sigh. A half eaten corn dog lay in it's paper tray and you contemplate finishing it now that it was cold. A moment later, and your holding the corn dog between your teeth as you type. It had taken you a lot longer to get back to your desk. The sound system was functioning just fine. Roland may have spent a small fortune on his business but that didn't mean he was wasteful. Everything had been maintained well and all you really had to do was replace a few batteries on some of the microphones. What did eat up most of your time was the endless barrage of people complaining of every minor thing under the sun. The computer was lagging and caused them to lose. The monitors were too bright. Someone was hogging the VR machine. By the time you had finished up with all that, the sun had started to set and the street lights had turned on. You quickly click on Serena's profile and begin composing a message. It felt wrong to try and be casual with Ming after one random encounter. She was also probably busy as well or so you told yourself. [Regal_20] Hey, how's things on your end? My friends and I have a plan on something we wanna do but...It's kind of a big thing and it might make us public enemy number 1 on the server if we succeed or even while we're trying to get it done. I know you got your own goals for the game and none of us want to put you in hot water because you were hanging out with us. You send the message and think for a moment. The message felt a bit too vague for you to feel comfortable with it and as you see the speech bubble showing that Serena was responding you quickly type out another message. [Regal_20] Basically, we're going to be trying to resurrect a powerful NPC that helped us. There's a lot we don't really know but basically, if the city of Valford finds out that we're trying to bring them back to life then they'd basically declare war on us. Maybe hunt us down for the rest of out in game lives barring some kind of big change in the way the city works. But because of how guilds interact with cities, it'd more than likely be the case that they'd try to hunt us down to gain favor with Valford. Not to mention other players just wanting to get in on the action of hunting other players with the server's permission. This kind of stuff can change a character. Right now we plan on doing some info gathering which shouldn't be too much trouble if you join us. I thought it'd only be fair if I gave you some more details on what could happen before you decide. The chat bubble stops for a moment before starting up again after a few moments then stops again. You watch the process repeat for a minute or so but you can't tell if it's simply the chat program catching every tiny pause and delaying them or if Serena was trying to think of what to say. [Serena_Starlight]If people start hunting us down then that means we'll be doing a lot of pvp, right? If so, I don't mind. I want to see what other parts of the world are like. [Regal_20]Yeah, we'd be doing a lot of it I guess. Maybe we'd have to pick our fights but yeah, we'd have to fight. Are you sure though? If this happens, we might get locked out of a city and if the big guilds try to come after us we'll have trouble getting gear or going into dungeons. Even heading into a town might be an issue. Not to mention, your own guild might find out and they could kick you out. [Serena_Starlight]It's alright. I'm only with them because I want to get good at PvP. I don't really care how I do it though. I can leave them if you want me to. Some people here are nice, but I feel like a face in a crowd. I don't think they'd care if I left.

Many players rarely rose up in ranks beyond the first few. Unless Serena did something worth noticing, or got lucky in some kind of guild promotion, she wouldn't be rising up without playing politics or buddying up with some of the higher ups. As annoying as it was, even real life tended to seep into the social aspects of the game. Still, having eyes and ears in another guild could be good. Spying on guilds was just another part of the game. You just weren't sure if felt comfortable asking someone you only knew in game, a novice as well, to do something like that for you. Before you could respond, Serena sends you another message. [Serena_Starlight]That reminds me. Did your plan involve killing people in my guild first? Or were you doing some other kind of game event I don't know about? You reread the message again, unsure if you had read it correctly. Maybe Serena mistyped her message. Confused, you respond. [Regal_20]Sorry, I don't know what you mean. I haven't left Valford and I haven't fought anyone here from Rising Dragons. There are some events that end up causing players to fight each other in the open world such as world bosses and some coliseums exist run by NPCs that players can participate in for cash or items. But I haven't done any of that either. There's another series of bubbles before you get a thinking emoji, a first for Serena, then a few more bubbles. [Serena_Starlight]I was in game a little bit ago and a party was talking about how they got killed on patrol again. But this time, they took a picture. It's been posted on the Guild's community board with a large bounty on the person's head. I don't know how to take pictures in game but I asked someone I know to send it to me. Isn't this you? The message gets pushed up as the attached image Serena sent you loads in. It's incredibly blurry and you assume it's due to it being taken just before the player died. There's tons of energy being emitted and surrounding the attacker but even in the low quality you recognize the kick. More importantly you can just make out what's around the killer's waist. You study the picture a bit longer. You can see some kind of sigil but can't make heads or tails of it. As far as you knew, it had no connection to any part of the game that you were aware of. Perhaps it was some kind of customization related to the hero class? You squint and try to make out more of the belt but the blur is too intense to make out anything other than it was glowing. Being able to glean as much as you could, you type out: [Regal_20]That's pretty awesome, but that's not me. That guy is playing the Hero class. I shouldn't be surprised that there would be others, especially on a new server. Someone was bound to make it work as well. You said there was a bounty on this guy? [Serena_Starlight]Yes, it's a pretty big sum I think. Is that normal? [Regal_20]Not really. Most guilds tend to ignore someone who killed their members for the most part. Usually, the killed group will run back with other guild members and just get revenge. This guy must have done something big to warrant an APB (All Points Bulletin) on top of a bounty. Did he steal from the guild bank or something? [Serena_Starlight]I don't know. I can ask but I'm not allowed to use the guild bank to take stuff out. I can only deposit things. I think high level crafters can take stuff out so they can make things for the guild. So if that person did something like that then he would have to be a high ranking member, right? [Regal_20]Yeah, that's true. Most big guilds have their bank access structured to prevent something like that. If someone high ranking stole from the guild, I think news would spread pretty fast. One of my friends has a pretty close ear to in game rumors and stuff. I can ask him but if you don't feel comfortable asking around. [Serena_Starlight]I don't mind. Storyteller Luo !!L+CpM0G8T5X ID:CTwhNjHs Sat 28 Feb 2026 06:34:02 No. 6377239 Report [Regal_20]It's a slightly complicated thing. It's true that a player can just respawn but killing them as a guild sends a message to start. Mainly, that messing with a guild member will be met with force. It's one of the reasons players join guilds, for protection. The other is to draw a line. Other Guilds can see where they need to watch their step. On a smaller scale, it can get a bit crueler. By killing this player, the guild can strip him of his gear and items. That's usually enough for most players to head elsewhere and leave the Guild alone. Plus it makes them less of a threat now that they don't have any power. However, if the guild really wants to, they can repeatedly kill the player over and over until they quit the game. Generally this is a last resort measure. It doesn't look good to the public for any big group to harass another player into quitting. Last thing anyone wants is to give the other guilds a common foe to rally the player base against. It's also against the ToS but guilds as big as yours has more than enough players to rotate through that they can argue it was just an unfortunate coincidence. I'm guessing your Guild is just going for the first option. They'll loot his items and be done with it. Still, can't imagine what could have happened to make them do this. Generally, guilds don't target single players like this. It's more often a group of people. [Serena_Starlight]If I hear something I'll let you know. But back to your plan, is there something I need to do to help? [Regal_20]Just come over to Valford. We'll meet you at the airship docks and from there we can head out. I didn't know that was something I could get. [Regal_20]Yup. You're in a pretty calm biome right now but the other starting areas have more extreme weather conditions. You can freeze to death or die of heat if you're not prepared. Up here in Valford it gets extremely cold. Cold weather gear will fend off the cold for normal days but during blizzards it's better to find shelter. [Serena_Starlight]I see.
