Mel glanced down at her tunic, stained, torn. She looked over at the broken satchel, then to the torn traveling clothes within.
“Yeah, a repair rune might be useful.”
Babs laughed. “You could use it. Ok we’ll draw it in the dirt until I think you’ve got it, then we’ll move onto something useful. Watch closely, it’s more complicated than it looks.”
Mel had spent a fair amount of time daydreaming of what the art of magic would look like. Two women drawing circles in the dirt for the better part of four hours had not once made the list. Still she persevered as the sun wandered lower and lower into the sky. The shape of the final rune was straightforward enough, two circles connected with a line, although the procedure of making them wasn’t. The right hand circle was first, made in a single counterclockwise stroke that was then reversed for a quarter of the circle. The line connecting the two circles came next, left to right, then the left circle in the opposite fashion of the first, starting with a quarter circle drawn counterclockwise, followed by a clockwise circle done in one long stroke.
“If you hesitate or pause the rune will appear to have repaired the object, but it will fall to pieces if the magic is ever disrupted. Someone did that with the wall to the crystal chamber beneath us.”
“Why does it look like a pair of glasses? You’d think that would be a vision rune or something. Or connecting two magic circles.”
Babs shrugged. “It’s said that runes are the written words of the gods. Why does the letter ‘A’ look the way it does? Probably makes sense to the gods. Some of them do make more sense, but there’s not much rhyme or reason.”
Mel scowled as her second circle came out malformed. “Do you know what the other symbol is? Who even finds these in the first place?”
“At my level you can start to…I’m not sure what the right word is. Something between find and build them. It’s a long process, I’ve never bothered to complete it, no patience. It’s probably easier for fifth levels. I’ll take a look at the other rune though, I have some theories I can test.”
Counterclockwise. Clockwise one quarter. “Sounds useful if there’s something in particular you need.”
Babs shrugged. “It’s usually easier to make due with what you have. But they can be found from nothing, if your grasp of mana is strong enough. Right to left.” She corrected.
Mel grimaced and started fresh. “You’d think fifth level wizards would be ruling the world.”
