Yes it would be acceptable if the character had a set of morals and ideals if they were explicitly made that way from the get go, but here the character is only given a motivation and an open interpretation on how he should act in response to those feelings.
It just comes off extremely lazy when your writing a narrative and and are expecting a response, that you pick and choose the one's that seem to be guiding towards a very obvious destination, even the venting wasn't real venting, because now miraculously all the feelings of anger and confusion are gone all at once, and now we don't even get the option of NOT hanging out with him.
If you had any sort of actual attachment to the quest you would agree that going along a predicable path tread a million times before narratively, is a thousand times worse than merely going in a different, more dark direction. Such as the proposed violence. At least it isn't regurgitating anything that hasn't been said before and is trying to be original, it may be even thought provoking eventually.
