Instead of shrinking into your chair or snapping back like he wanted, you met his gaze with a challenging look of your own.
“I'm going to be brutally honest here. I didn't know about any of you, or this place, or the prophecy, or my own grandmother until today.”
Delphyne raised an eyebrow, looking more than a little skeptical.
“Seriously? Not even your own grandmother?”
“I led a sheltered life, okay?” you snapped back, before returning your attention to Ward, and narrowing your eyes at him. “With that in mind, if there was any ‘prophetic scouring’ to be done down here, it would occur under a ‘self-fulfilling’ clause. So, tell me, what reasons would you have for being destroyed?”
Ward’s mouth fell open for a moment, but his expression quickly darkened as he bared his fangs in a toothy snarl that you found much more fitting for a Nosferatu. His sister just shook her head at him.
“I'm sure you'll come up with something…” he said through gritted teeth, leaning over the table.
Carn's arms tensed, but you had a feeling that his attention was mostly focused on the snarling vamp.
“She's telling the truth.” Young put in, looking shame-faced. “She's never met me before, and I'd bet her parents never breathed a word about the prophecy to her.”
Garth’s raspy inhale sounded a little sharper than usual, and you wondered whether that was meant to be a gasp.
“That doesn't mean that the prophecy isn't true.” Carnelian added, and you couldn't help but feel betrayed by his words. “Your granddaughter was merely the most credible ‘Slayer candidate’ on our list.”
“What do you mean by ‘Slayer candidate’?” Ben asked. “You make it sound like this is some kind of contest.”
“Yeah, one you don't wanna win.” you said grumpily.
“Is ‘Skul’ another one of these candidates?” Ana asked. “He has ‘The Slayer’ in his title.”
You and Ben nodded your agreement.
“Yeah. Our girl doesn't have that.” Ben chimed in.
“Skul will be dealt with.” Carnelian promised. “That man is problem enough without proclaiming himself to be a prophetic savior.”
“What exactly does this prophecy say?” Ana inquired.
Young opened her mouth to answer, but Ben's hand shot out before she could say anything.
“Ooh! I know this one. Can I tell it?”
Young sat back in her chair with a huff and waved a dismissive hand in his direction.
