“Ben introduced me to you a while ago. You were…smaller back then. Your hair was curlier too. I like the way it is now, though.”
Joy reached out to run a hand through Iara’s white, wavy hair. The shark girl reacted by placing a hand on Joy’s arm and giving it a light squeeze.
Glass gave them both a warm, affectionate smile.
“That’s when Joyce joined our family, the Morlocks. She had a bag full of candy and video games. Do you remember that?”
Iara blinked in confusion and tilted her head to the side slightly, as if looking at Glass from another angle would somehow change something. Glass’ smile faltered a bit at that. Iara’s reaction was far from encouraging.
“You remember the Morlocks down by the Alley. You guys live in the classiest sewer on this entire planet, thanks to yours truly.”
You said, jabbing a thumb back at yourself.
“That’s part of the reason for why we met. You heard that there was clean drinking water in the Alley, and you moved in with Callisto and Glass.”
You were about to explain who Callisto was, when you noticed that Iara’s mouth was moving.
“Cal…listo.”
Her voice wasn’t nearly as viscous as you remembered it being. It was smooth and woefully innocent. Like Joy had been before she started interacting with more people.
And then, Iara raised one hand to cover her eye, and your breath caught. She was covering the same eye that Callisto had her eyepatch on!
Iara uncovered her eye and stared at Glass.
“Glass.”
She turned to Joyce, reached hand out, and ran it through her hair in the same way she’d done to her.
“Joyce.”
Both Joyce and Glass were nodding enthusiastically, their faces cracking into relieved smiles.
Finally, she turned to you. You swallowed hard as she focused on you with an uncomfortable amount of intensity.
Then, she smiled wide, her face splitting into the biggest grin you’ve seen from her since you brought her here.
“Ben…Parker.”
You couldn’t help but laugh. You didn’t even care that Glass overheard. Just hearing her say your name was such a relief that you thought your legs might give out.
But then, she turned her finger back on herself and looked at each of you questioningly. Was she...asking who she was? Those nanites must've scrambled her brain good.
What will you say? (Video game segment comes after this!)
>"Your name is Iara. You helped me when Cindy lost her voice. You protected the Morlocks when Callisto and Joyce needed you the most. And you protected my team when the entire mission went lopsided. You're a hero, as far as I'm concerned."
>"You're 'The Deep One', a friend of the Morlocks and mutants everywhere. And...you're my friend too."
>"That 'emergency procedure' gave your power a major boost. I think that deserves a new name. How about...'The Starshark'!"
>Let Glass and Joyce answer that one for you. They probably know her better than you do.
>Write-in.
