The battle began in the east, with a shower of heavy shells upon the southeast village, where anti-tank and infantry had been spotted. Under the cover of artillery fire, the eastern task force of the battalion shot at whatever the heavy guns did not pound. Even so, the massively outgunned enemy gave bitter resistance. Von Totmann’s platoon took particularly heavy casualties as they bore the brunt of counter-fire. The enemy’s positions were well fortified, but the accurate fire of supporting armored vehicles managed to reduce the enemy severely.
