>>5330401>>5329536“...Bane of Arthropods, Sharpness I, and Fire Aspect I…” Matt finishes listing off all of your enchantments– most of which pretty much suck!
On top of that, only five of your swords ended up getting enchanted, and, while you shouldn’t be counting on Ralph to enchant all your swords, you were kind of expecting something slightly…better.
“Eh, we’ll fuse the good swords.” Matt says offhandedly. “We got enough of them to last. I got dibs on this bad boy– V can suck it if he thinks he’s getting the good gear.”
“How’s the farm?” Now, you’re more curious about that rather than the swords.
“Big, spacious, out of the way– basically everything you would want in this place.” Matt tells you. “Kids like it so far.”
“So how long until you think you’ll be able to get them back to where they need?” You don’t expect all those kids home in a day, but you end up asking anyways.
“Yeahh… about that…” For a good few moments, your brother doesn’t answer, the only noise being his breathing on the other end of the line.
It’s that kind of behavior that gives you the feeling that there is some sort of problem, and what Matt says next confirms it for you: “Some of them don’t exactly have places to go back to…”
“Come again?” You sputter, not quite believing your ears.
“I mean some of them don’t actually have homes, family, next-of-kin… that kind of shit.” So you’ve picked up a good number of orphans basically, which you think is unfortunate for those captives, but anything is better than being stuck in the whitewashed prison that is FutureLabs.
“How many are some?” You inquire anyways.
“Just about half, if you can believe that,” Matt factually returns. “Hate to say it, but we might have no choice but to keep them here until the situation’s fully over, if not longer.” And who knows how long that would be because, even with everything you’re doing for the sake of other mutants, you don’t really know what life for them will be like once FutureLabs is truly gone.
“I got Jenna already agreeing to it; the aunt and uncle are more than happy to have the extra farmhands as well. I’m giving them a good bit of compensation anyhow.”
