"I know." You cut him off. You didn't want to think about this any longer. This was war and people died. You just hope that the lives that were being saved outnumbered the lives you were taking. The feeling of shackles of immeasurable weight throb on your wrists and ankles. Memories of a darkened hall flash before you can shut them out. You know that this was going to be another sleepless night. Gods forgive him for what you were doing. It all felt like an endless void. The present you disgusted at who you were, the past you disgusted at who you are now and the conflict within you. Part of you hopes that you're never found again. You're not sure if you can face everyone again and you're sure that you don't deserve to see them again. All you can do is find comfort in that brief year of your life that gave you true happiness.
Aleksandr places a hand on your shoulder. "Come friend. You have been out here long enough. It's time to change guard shift."
"Yes...I suppose it is that time." You say numbly as you begin to move.
"Your friends...Do you really think they can stop them?" He asks.
"Yes. Mongolia will burn if that is what they wish. But knowing them they will do the impossible. Somehow they will save us all." You say. Aleksandr nods.
"I see...that is good. Then they will be able to see all the good you have done as well." He says as the two of you round a bend and stand at the edge of a valley. Even from this distance, you could see hundreds of Aleksandr's kind and of other species you were more familiar with. Men, women, and children living their lives hidden away and sheltered from the war raging down south...for now. As the two of you approach and a small squad of armed men walks past to take your place, you can see the anxiety and worry ease up slightly in the eyes of the citizens. They had lived to see another day, some more borrowed time before hell erupted and soldiers rained down upon them. But that would never happen. Not as long as you drew breath.
