In a morbid way, this story sounds similar to your own. Not the best paternal figures. You have more things in common than the beanies.
“Huh, small world…” You hunch over to get close. “My mom died under *peculiar circumstances* as well.”
“And those are?” Celia doesn’t like either of the two places this can go. The serious route, or the dumb one.
“A very deliberate traffic accident that went awry...” You look up to the dusty ceiling, then back at Celia, who looks puzzled. “Don’t look at me like that, I was the target! My stepfather hired some goons to orchestrate the whole thing, run me over while we were outside. He needed insurance money badly, and I was the most expendable member of the family. But one wrong swerve and that’s why I’m here and not… her.”
“I bet the Clan was involved.” Celia assumes.
“As far as I know, yeah. It’s more complicated than that, but all the details mean shit to me.” You wonder if this is a good time of the year to miss your mom. “I learned this years later after he kicked me out.” You bet Joel would be happy if he heard you call him your stepfather.
“What an enormous cocksucker...” Celia is very agitated. “I’m sorry.”
“At least we can relate…” You chuckle.
“Not yet, I haven’t told you the whole thing…” Celia will respond to your story kindly. “It was just me and my mom, nothing fancy. My father was in the picture, but between him and mom, they couldn’t form a sentence without bickering. He got so sick of us, he never showed up again.” Celia caresses the hedgehog doll. “Years passed, and I don’t recall why she went out that day, but my mom jumped from a 7 store building onto the roof of a car. Sorry, a lil’ blunt, but that’s how the cops told me.” Celia looks through the window again. “My father didn’t want anything to do with me. He couldn’t let me be around his new family and ruin it.”
You silently nod, but you know, disapprovingly! Celia would be a cherished member of any family!
“Instead, he wanted me to study abroad…” Celia rolls her eyes. It clearly didn’t pan out. “Before I left for my short excursion, I overheard his men spilling out the truth. How my father wanted us both dead, but the trigger was too heavy for the cowardly assassin when it became my turn… So, yeah, our stories kinda match. Or something.”
“You’re one step ahead of me, ‘cause I haven’t even started my own revenge.” You joke. “Besides, you have a lot to thank me for already. Because… guess who found that *critical weakness*?”
“Y-Y-You found the scroll…?!” Celia can’t believe it.
“Eyup! Wait, how do you know it is a scroll?! I had no idea until I took it.” You scratch your chin.
“Because I’ve been after that thing since forever.” Celia reveals. “They moved it out of his house ‘cause of me. Or, at least, away from *the pesky thief*.”
