>>5546261He takes a pair of steps back, moving from the left-most item on the table to the next one. Which seems to be some sort of ball within a pair of opposite rings, the orb seemingly free-floating. He picks it up by the outer ring, passing it to Serebryakov.
“Here. Step away from the table, if your would, then channel your magical power into this.” he tells her, your assistant nervously taking the item. You nod to her, Visha nodding back then stepping away from the table. Her Operation Orb begins glowing as she channels her mana, then to your surprise the orb and inner ring both begin rapidly spinning. She stares at it, entranced as suddenly a barrier of magical energy springs to life around her.
“Oh wow!” your ally says, looking around at the shield as she quits powering the shield. “It's a shield!”
“Yes, indeed.” Dr. Schugel says, drawing a rocket launcher with nine separate barrels. “Watch.”
Then without hesitation fires, launching nine separate missiles. They all fly wildly, some flying straight towards her while others spin like corkscrews. Visha “Eeep”s, eyes widening a bit as they all close in, then she disappears as the projectiles explode. But as the room's excellent ventilation clears the smoke cloud that engulfed her, you see that Visha's fine. More than fine in fact, as the shield is still running. However, its pale blue color has turned more violet, Serebryakov looking curiously at it.
“Ah, looks like a couple of the missiles missed.” Schugel says, casually dropping the heavy weapon down on the ground top-first. “No wonder Vox developed their Harbinger, it's a much better weapon platform than this old thing. But you'll have to break that shield before you can hand the barrier back. Energy can pass out of the shield, but not physical objects.”
“So, this shield is permanent after the initial energy investment, until it takes sufficient damage?” you ask him, the doctor nodding. “Very well. Stay still, Major Serebryakov.”
“Yes ma'am.” she replies, you drawing your energy pistol and firing a few shots into it. With each hit the shield turns darker and darker red, until with the fourth shot the barrier fizzles out. She then steps forward as you holster your sidearm, your sidekick handing the barrier device back to the scientist. “What is this called?”
“Since it was based off of the Megacorp tech known as the Tesla Barrier, and I combined it with the tech of Dreadzone's Holoshield technology, I call it the Omni-Armor Generator.”
“What's the highest output it can withstand?” you ask, to which he smiles with a mischievous glint in his eye.
