With a low profile, you scrunch even lower to the ground before poking your head out into the opening. The faint light overhead offered some illumination. Enough to see that there wasn’t anything directly in front of you.
For the extra security, you lean down, grasping a hard, jagged stone. It volleys up and over into the darkness beyond.
Stone cracks against stone, echoing through the empty void. It wasn’t enough assurance for you, so you waited.

You throw yourself to the ground. No rhyme or reason. Your body reacts before you can form a coherent thought.
A hard, wet smack shakes the ground. Stone burns and sizzles above you.
You thrust forward, pivoting on your heel with the sword drawn. The tentacle slinks back into the darkness.
It definitely wasn’t safe to stay here. What could you do? Running was an option, but turning your back against this thing seemed like suicide.
