Now that you've created some distance between yourself and that gory bloodbath, you decide to call your mom. If this doesn't work out, then you'll just hide out in the woods until the time's right. You crouch behind a mound of excavated earth that's taller down your house and take a closer look at your phone. It doesn't seem to have suffered any damage during... whatever happened. You still don't know what to think about all of the carnage you woke up to. It's easier not to think about it at all.
You call her number. With nothing to do but wait for her to pick up, you're left shivering in the cold and listening to that same tone repeat itself over and over again. She doesn't pick up and you go through to voicemail, but there's no way in hell that you're just going to leave a message for her. You terminate the call and try again. She finally answers after your third attempt, but the first thing that you hear from her is an exasperated sigh.
"Sam, I've told you not to call me while I'm working."
In the heat of the moment, you completely forgot. She's got a job at a diner that keeps her working until six almost every day of the week. She's only able to come home for an hour or two, to cook dinner and change clothes before she's out the door again to do some cleaning job - at least, that's what she tells you. You try not to think too much about the lengths she goes to put food on the table and keep a roof over your head.
"Hey Ma," you begin. Your voice is a little hoarse but otherwise, you manage to hold yourself together. "Something's happened. Could you pick me up at the old coal mine?"
"The old... God damn it, I've told you to stay outta there," she chides. The irritation in her tone is pretty apparent. "It ain't safe in there. Look, I really oughta finish up here, my boss won't be happy if I just drop everything to come get you. You're seventeen, you're not a kid any more, you can walk yourself home."
Didn't she hear you say that something happened? She's not listening to you, she never listens. How are you going to get her to take you seriously?
>Be honest with her. You just woke up in the middle of the mine next to a couple of corpses, covered in their blood. You think you might've killed them.
>Put the blame on someone else. There was this bear that killed a couple of kids. That won't explain some of the details but she doesn't need to know everything.
>Try to avoid saying too much on the phone. You don't want to go to jail over this. Just keep on begging for her to pick you up and pray that she'll acquiesce.
>Hang up. She's always been too wrapped up in work to actually be there when you need there. You'll just have to take care of yourself. Time to go innawoods.
