“Whatever. Most of those guys out there are glory hogs looking for crimes that'll get them the most press coverage. They rope you into their inner circle, and then they steal your credit and say ‘This was a team victory’.”
You gave him a flat look.
“Didn’t know you were such an expert.”
“You'd be surprised what I know.”
“Like what's in the afterlife. Except, you conveniently aren't allowed to tell me anything.” you said.
“You saw what Ammit did to that guy earlier. I'm not taking any chances while she's still breathing down my neck.”
“Aww, you scared?” you teased.
“I'm not scared. Just being cautious, is all.” he said, sounding a bit touchy.
“Well, you'll have all the time in the world to tell me later. We've got a lot to catch up on.”
He gave a laugh that exposed his fangs.
“I bet. Can’t wait to hear the story behind your new look.”
Yeah. You too.
“It's good to have you back, B.” you said with a warm smile.
“Good to be back, Moon Girl. I'm glad yours was the first face I saw. Even if it was behind a mask.”
You went in for a hug, and B opened one arm to welcome you into the embrace. It was the most outward display of intimacy that you could remember him showing in a long time. You guess coming back from the dead will do that to a person. It puts things in perspective.
You leaned away from him and took a few steps back.
“Call me when you get a new phone. I'm sure Morbius can get you one easy.”
“I hope they came out with a new Nokia while I was dead.”
You rolled your eyes at him and turned to walk away.
“Such a hipster.” you muttered.
“Hey! You take that back.” he called after you.
“Bye, B!” you shouted back, waving a hand at him without bothering to turn back around.
His voice was quickly lost in the crowd as you made your way over to where you last saw Ben. It didn't take long for you to find him. There were only a few people in this room that were getting a lot of attention from the locals. Despite Ben not being in the spotlight for a terribly long time during this event, he was still recognized as someone who had gone out of their way to defeat Varnae's Kaiju and defend everyone from not only the Brood, but also Simon's zombies.
Right now, he was casually chatting with a family of merfolk. Ana wasn't with him, but you could sense that she was still nearby. Maybe she went to go find Delphyne.
“No, I'm not actually related to any Were-Spiders. At least…I don't think so.” Ben pondered aloud.
As soon as he noticed you approaching, he stopped what he was doing and waved you over.
“Hey Slay-”
You quickly shushed him.
“Quiet! I don't need everyone knowing where I am.” you urged, signaling Mercy to wrap your head with more fabric.
With a bit of work, she had flattened your ears under a hood, and bundled your tails together under a long dress she had made for you. It wasn't her best outfit idea, but it wasn't the weirdest thing you've seen someone wear down here.
