“Hm.” You balked at that. The most expensive venture yet, and it was far from the most impressive- though to be fair, much of the others had their costs offset by other factors. “Anything else?”
Antonia nodded. “An interesting option. Signore, do you know of flying boats?”
Aeroplanes adapted for extended maritime operations. For them, the entire ocean was a landing and takeoff strip. You affirmed that you knew of them.
“Raiders of any sort are easily evaded by taking to the sky,” Antonia said, “It would still be costly in all respects, but the number of skilled men we would need for a fleet of aircraft would be less than a fleet of boats. Even seventeen years after the Emrean War, there are those that underestimate aircraft, and they have improved in leaps and bounds since then.”
“The estimate, though, in silver?”
Antonia thought for a moment and counted on her fingers. “Specialist aircraft are expensive. They are faster, though, so we would need less of them. Three quarters of our savings, the maintenance somewhat less.”
“So that’s our necessity,” you said to yourself, “But we haven’t decided where we should go first, have we?”
“Anywhere but the Occhio would require the preparation we discussed,” Antonia said, “But yes.”
>The Martello Islands were far from anywhere else- but they had a population that you could interact with and a cause you could hope to entice them with. The hardest target in one way, but the most obvious in another.
>The Occhio di Baia was a vital base to have in your hand for the rest of the sea. No matter what, you would have to take it at some point, and it was the closest. No matter the difficulties.
>See if you could strike up an arrangement with the Avanguardia’s islands. Perhaps they could let you operate off of them- though your lack of guarantees for them and the company they kept might mean you would have to give them a good deal…
>Even if it meant making a strong enemy right off the bat, who was more in need of the liberation of the Dawn than the serfs of the Nuvole Blu? What place was more in need of Revolution? Even if you weren’t sure how you’d even start to go about it…
