”Come on Cheryl... There are people here who need my help. People are preyed upon by the mafia on this level, just like the tax collectors of Level 5. Don't you remember?”
”Yes Max I know. We are doing our best to stop the corruption and extortion. It's just something too complex for brute force to solve.”
You almost want to tell her how you stopped the mob from doing exactly that with your “brute force”, but you stop yourself. Should you tell her about your encounter today? If you do, that might just prove her point given you ran into trouble your very first time on Level 4, plus you'd have to admit you were almost shot by a crossbow. Maybe that would just freak her out more. Before you can figure if you should or not, the moment has passed.
”I'm going to do it anyway, with or without your help.”
”Take down the entire mafia? All of the crime families?”
”Well, uhh, no. Not necessarily...”
”You can't Max. It's too dangerous. I don't want you getting involved.”
”What are YOU going to do about it? Snitch on me for swapping between levels?”
”If you don't listen to reason...”
”Go ahead then! Ruin my life for trying to do the right thing!”
”Maybe I will!”
”Fine!
”Fine!”
You get up, and storm towards the door, making a show of it. Just before you do, you notice something fuzzy jump up on a piece of furniture.
”Oh! I didn't know you had a cat!”
”Whiskers? She's usually shy around new people. I'm surprised she came out to say hi.”
”Whose a good kitty!?”
It doesn't seem to have the same reaction as your genetically modified pet rat. People on higher levels can have more and more “advanced” animal companions. You think all the dogs are on Level 3. You take a moment to stroke the animal's cheek, and it turns to rub into your finger. You turn to Cheryl after the deescalation.
”...I'm going now. Be seeing you.”
”On Level 5. Right?”
You don't want to get into a shouting match again, so you just leave. It's a shame Cheryl won't help. Maybe you'll be able to convince her another time, until then, you're on your own.
