>>6118228>>6118495>>6118498>battle royale as an illustration of MORAL RELEVANCY, economic competition etcBack in the ancient deathmatch era before PUBG, Fortnite or Escape From Tarkov Arena Breakout extraction shooters, there was this literal gametype format called Survivor or Last Man Standing, you could play it in unreal tournament 1999 lol or ut2k3 ut2k4 etc. obviously the maps were smaller and less satisfying, no-one really played it when you could just play deathmatch or ctf etc.
Now Battle Royale is basically this with 1 life, the maps are bigger better graphics more inventory mechanics etc and with the growth of the internet videogames being more mainstream than in ut99 days obviously the audience total addressable market, popularity is bigger
No-one when they are playing PUBG or Fortnite thinks OH MY GOD THIS GAME IS SUPER FUN BECAUSE IT IS A METAPHOR FOR ECONOMIC COMPETITION I MUST BUY dlc VIRTUAL ITEMS OUTFITS season subscriptions lol but my point being, something changed about the real world, the economic circumstances (I would say it is the post financial crisis 2008 landscape) suddenly, this game format which always existed and was not that interesting gained MORAL RELEVANCE, popularised as a formula in Hunger Games films media etc. The battle royale analogy of ruthless live-or-die gladiatorial competition, the ut99 voiceover lol
>>6115680>>6115669in the internet algorithmically governed world whether it is finding a job, dating or getting a loan or an interview or workplace promotion or education grant or online influence popularity followers etc. or even US National Security defense doctrine lol ("strategic competition") Epic Games took this Battle Royale theme into Fortnite, Unreal Engine and the revenues ended up powering all videogames, all virtual worlds lol (obviously nowadays Fortnite MAUs have declined but the history of this still stands) Generations psychologically trained to think like this
So this is all I am trying to convey with the idea and theme of moral relevance etc the moral purpose, I think it is a crucial ingredient behind why some games resonate with people (because of the undercurrents the social economic landscape the real world etc) just as how when people play PUBG or Fortnite "for fun" they don't explicitly think about this etc. But I feel the moral relevancy is something that can be harnessed for games
Anyway, probably to the relief of many anons tee hee hee I will stop ranting about this lol before ReptoidQM accuses me of more wh40k RADICAL HERESY hehe
