You loosed an arrow into the darkness.
You didn’t know where it would land, or what was behind it, or even what you hoped to hit.
There was no point grieving or falling into despair. You just had to trust. If this was the end, you would face it with dignity.
Time was moving slower. Maybe it was your adrenaline? You saw the light black-purple streak from your arrow fly towards the darkness.
It detonated just in front of Sora, hitting something that was encircling her. Encircling both of you. A relentless, plasma-like darkness that tried to engulf you. The black oozed spilled and writhed. Your arrow didn’t seem to hurt it. Its mass was immense, overwhelming both you and Sora.
It moved closer towards your sides. It was ready to strike. Sora was nowhere in sight. Dodging while on the ground was out of the question. If you were going to fall, might as well save Sora’s life. Was the arrow useless? Didn’t matter anymore.
Raising your hand, you tried to use your Semblance to lighten the oppressive black liquid. It would swallow you faster, sure, but maybe this would give your friend a few precious seconds to escape.
You felt your Aura pour out from you as you resigned to your death, closing your eyes. At least you were happy that you made a difference, however small. That was what you always wanted, right? To help others. To change the world for the better, to…
…
…
Why wasn’t the liquid hurting you?
You opened your eyes, feeling completely dumbfounded. Everything in front of you seemed blurry. The liquid was indeed surrounding you, yet it was as if it was petrified. Well, not exactly. It was moving, although barely. You reached out with your other hand, touching it. As your fingers made contact, you managed to push it aside effortlessly.
You saw Sora petrified while black liquid was held back, suspended in the air, forming what looked like a perfect curve. Some pieces of glass and rubble nearby were floating was well. Was time stopped? No. No it wasn’t. You could still hear the rain above you, yet it wasn’t falling. It diverted sideways, repelled by some invisible force shaping a dome around you.
You stood. You were able to move. It felt… weird. Liquidly, but you could do it. Your hearing was getting better, catching the sound of rain that no longer struck your skin. What was happening? Was this the work of the arrow? Was this your Semblance? Something external? Maybe you got help from somewhere or someone?
You tried to lower the ‘dosage’ of your Semblance on the liquid, restoring its normal weight. It started moving on its own again, lunging towards you. Fortunately, it barely had any speed, allowing you to make it lighter once more. It froze again mid-air. So, it was your Semblance? You made Sora’s weight normal again. She felt to her knees, clutching her chest and gasping frantically for air.
