The concept of ''Little Fates'' is a belief that Mother Earth and her daughters try to improve their faithful lives by engineering special circumstances or coincidences that can lead to a better life. The divines do not puppeteer their faithful into pre-ordained destinies but the Good Mother (who is far more active than Father Sky) cannot will herself to remain passive when witnessing the trials of her beloved children.
You've always been undecided about this. Odd coincidences indeed exist... You could even say that coming here today was a Little Fate because your entire family might just get involved in the drama of Monsters and meeting Augustine was pure luck, but did Mother Earth have a hand here?
''You've seen the town grow?'' You're starting to feel a little confident with talking, Augustine is good company.
''Yup yup.'' That same, nearly sad expression shadows her features for a moment, her joviality is quick to return when your gazes meet. ''It was fortuitous timing because I got here before the first big wave that pushed our baron to cooperate with Fallerin ki-I mean our King. I sorta... squeezed from one realm to the next.'' She makes a comical waving motion with her hand.
''This church acted as a school for the whole town for four years.'' She continues, watching her medicine progress through the tubes. ''And here I decided to be of better help for the unfortunate monsters, I don't want to be arrogant enough to believe nobody else worries about their health but... I've yet to see anyone else that isn't a Mamono trying.''
''I-''
''Sorry one moment!''
She interrupts you, opening the small pouch she carried to extract a dry dark grape.
''This is a fruit born of Seyraphal Corruption. It took one month to bloom inside the Baron greenhouse.''
You barely resist the urge to scoot away. ''Is it infectious?''
''Don't worry. All I need to do...'' She plops it down inside the finished product and the ''fruit'' quickly dissolves inside the liquid, turning the semi-clear yellow-red into murky darkness. ''...is mix it with the purified nectar of Strangleroots. Did you know those plants grab your arms when you pluck them? It's an experience.'' Augustine cleans her hands with a cloth.
Watching someone who knows what they're doing is strangely hypnotic.
''A fruit of individual Corruption.'' The liquid inside that large tube made you shudder. ''Your patient is lucky to have you.''
''Careful now, more praises, and I'll hug you.'' Says the doctor basking in self-satisfaction. ''What I've learned about Corruption comes only from a few rare books, and the monsters here. Don't believe my doctoring is anywhere near adequate or comparable to actual experts inside their free countries.''
''Yet you care enough to nearly get physical with the bishop.'' You lean forward, your hand comes to rest on top of hers. She's not moving away ''I-I've just gotten here today but I don't think many care.''
