“Can you repeat that?” Your father, King Lewis of Lindan, says almost in disbelief. It makes sense, seeing as you brazenly walked into his study and said what you did. But there is no other option if you wish to follow in the path you’ve chosen.
“I wish to be granted leave to make regular visits to the Capital's Cathedral for research and study purposes.” You repeat.
He lets out a shaky breath, “Goddess preserve me and why do you wish for this?” At least he didn’t immediately say ‘No.’
“I’ve been instructed to compete in the Grand Tournament by the Inquisition. I intend to do so to limit the potential threat Strangers may pose to the event.”
“And you believe you can do so by competing?”
You nod, “That is what I have been told, though I wish to head to the Cathedral so that I may prepare for this task by developing my skills and knowledge against the threats I may encounter.”
“This threat, how bad is it? Does the Inquisition know something about my event that I do not?”
You think back to what Asher told you, “I know of no specifics, but from what I understand, the Inquisition always places assets, such as myself, into suitably large events like this.”
Your father groans, “I always slightly believe that to be the case, but I could have lived my life without that knowledge. Fine, I grant you leave, you may come and go as you please.”
“But-” You blink, “You do?”
Your father graciously nods, “It is a fine political move to have you compete. As our family's newest black sheep, this could be a good political maneuver to increase your reputation, though that is only if you place well.”
“I will fight to win, no matter what.”
Your father has a contemplative pause before next speaking, “Be mindful not to overstretch my graces. I grant you leave to study and train. If I hear that you’ve once again taken part in a kingdom-wide conspiracy, I will not be pleased.”
“Understood.”
“Good, then I will make the arrangements that I must. Though I believe I should make it clear that it is unlikely that you’ll be seen in a favorable light by either the event organizers or the audience, even with any of your recent achievements. Inquisitors, while respected, are seen with suspicion and worry, and the opening of the MageKnight Academy for the fall semester will only serve to bring back the vile rumors of the spring.”
“I am well aware of what others may think of me-
>and I am prepared to take the role of this tournament's 'villain.'" Such a reputation may serve to benefit you more than it can hinder… And perhaps you could look rather stylish as a ‘villainess’ as Marie says.
>and I will prove them all wrong!” You refuse to kowtow to the expectations the Honor Duel have put on you. Even if it will be harder to swim against the current of public opinion you are a woman who has done the impossible before.
