When the ships arrived over the planet a series of drop ships were sent down towards the surface. This planet, before even the Mechanicum arrived, was marked for exterminatus. Though unlike those words this planet sported a shield that stretched across the entire surface.
In normal terms there was no standard way of sending a bombardment for the Exterminatus. Their bombardment would be stopped by the shields. Only assaults via drop ships would have any likelihood of defeating this planet. This was likely where the Mitu felt their superiority in thinking that the Mechanicum would be forced into a land battle against them.
That was not what the Mechanicum had in mind though.
Hundreds of drop ships were sent upon the surface making contact. Many of them land near cities. As expected of the Xenos' foresight at this moment these cities began to raise their shields. Such a thing would not have been needed lest they expected the cities to take in heavy bombardment from either space of the landing forces, but the Xenos had no reason to do so.
They were raising them in fear of what was about to happen. That they faintly understood what was to come after them and tried to save themselves from their fate. It was however because they could not understand this threat that they were too slow.
Across the planet several Skitarii, Servitors, and a few Astartes stood proudly in position. For a moment the smell of incense came through the air as the Skitarii reached into the nearby crates and picked up a metal case from it. A few clicks were heard before revealing a glass cylinder within it.
As the Astartes and other Skitarii began to fight the incoming forces of the Mitu a Servitor would approach the Skitarii who held the cylinder. They would raise one mechanical arm into the air to ensnare the glass before shattering it.
And like that the World Eater Virus was released upon the planet.
