I had been inventing an utterly demented setting, it was inspired by the most random historical phenomenon like this
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yangtze_Patrolbut early medieval.
My setting was after some unspecified cataclysm, the entire world consists of one remaining river shaped as a folded space-filling fractal Peano curve
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peano_curveThe river connects the last two remaining city states cultures, the western side is the GUNBOAT EMPIRE their city is Ashuelot (I chose this because it sounded like Camelot, Trump primary in New Hampshire lol also I wanted VENGEANCE against GRRMartin stealing stupid no context English names like Bolton for Game Of Thrones lol) they have medieval type handgonnes and cannons, maybe they look a bit like WFRP landsknechts etc (or Marco Polo?) Then on the other side of the river in the East is Shangdu, the Ascended Capital (I chose this because it is like de Quincey Xanadu) it is probably more akin to Karakorum or something, unleash all oriental Silk Road desert bit from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon stereotypical antics etc. Shangdu has some dredging ships reclaiming land from the world river. In between the two cities and the fractal river that folds in on itself is just steep gorges endless desert and wilderness ruins wasteland steppe and of course ravenous hungering feral VAMPIRES
pic related is some inspiration I had for the endless riverworld, it includes the precursors of oil rigs the SEADROME air platform and also ww2 Maunsell Forts sea castle yay
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maunsell_Fortsalong the Thames estuary. I kept oscillating between whether to make the setting medieval or just conventional post-apocalyptic argh
