A slight reminder on "class ranks" - you pick one when you sign on to the company. Striker, Stalwart, Sapper, Scourge . . .
These are core-skillsets universally recognised in the Leviathan Strait as composing a distinct group of skills. Not everyone who wields a blade is a Striker, not every knight is a Stalwart - but if you're told three Strikers have been hired and are coming for you, you can at least be certain-sure it'll be fast, violent and graceful as opposed to heavy armor and thumping steps.
So a Memory allows you to rank up a class-role. And now naturally you're thinking "Ah, but I'm a Striker, and so I guess I can't learn Scourge Things" to which I must regretfully inform you that you are /wrong/.
You can learn Scourge Things. Or Striker Things. Or Steelsoul Things.
But of course, those who already have that role are better at it. Bloom is a Steelsoul now, and if he continues, he's going to be better at that particular set of skills than Ink will ever be if she starts branching into it now.
Secondly, and worth keeping in mind, is that total ranks in a role serves as a shorthand for your clout and reputation within those circles too. And sometimes that can be quite useful - some gear and training is only available to people of a certain persuasion. Sorry softsoul, the stoic Stalwart retinues you might find in their travelling courts simply simply won't let you practice in their company if you're not enough of a Stalwart yourself.
But on the other hand, breadth is a victory all on its own.
>Also do note that reality is being restructured just slightly, so if you see something TO GOOD TO BE TRUE, then remind yourself Ink probably hit her head and is also drunk right now, and so maybe she wrote something down wrong on these papers and it will soon be corrected.
