>>5750887“Before Professor Irakay starts class, it is high time for a warning,” she says, severe. “Professor Potter’s class, which he finally convinced me to allow, is no doubt giving many of you ideas. I am sure at least one of you has thought about using one of your other classes in your battles, which is fine and well when it comes to, say Divination,” (or potions, you add mentally, already brewing plans,) “But not, and I repeat, NOT transfiguration!”
“In battles you may use any of what you have been taught to be safe transfiguration. By that I mean, of course, any transfiguration which uses a specific spell. Should you need to transform a small object into a bird, for example, you may feel free to use the Avifors spell. Should you need to do any impromptu sewing during your battles, you may use acusiasus spell to turn a small piece of wood into a needle. Were any damage to afflict your birds or your needles, they would reverse to their original form before any other effects could take place. Not so with free transfiguration, which you are not to use in battle, under no circumstance.”
She writes down the same rules Professor Irakay has written every single class for the past five years:
I will never Transfigure anything into a liquid or gas.
I will never Transfigure anything that looks like food or anything else that goes inside a human body.
I will never Transfigure anything that is to be burned because it could make smoke.
“Transforming anything into anything is, as I am sure Professor Irakay has said many times, extremely dangerous. Should you turn a metal ball into a piece of wood, burn it and breathe the smoke, what will happen when it distransfigures? St. Mungus, that’s what will happen! In controlled environments, free transfiguration is safe if you follow its rules. Battles are not safe environments. They are chaos, as I am sure you will soon learn.”
“During a battle you may think to transfigure something into a great block of stone to give you cover. It breaks none of the rules you know. However, If your enemy casts bombarda your great stone is now dust, which will get into not only your irresponsible lungs and eyes, it will get into the eyes and lungs of your friends. As such, the correct answer to seeing a friend use free transfiguration during battle should be to cast ‘Finite Incantatem’ and then call Potter so he can expel them. Is that understood by every student in this class?”
The class nods, stunned.
“I asked, is that understood, class?”
“Yes, Headmistress!” The class bellows in unison.
“Very well. The class is yours, Professor Irikay.”

Finally, Thursday arrives, and with it comes your training with Lily. Will you go with your friends, or will you go train with her alone?
