Short?” you ask, this timeline's version of your grandfather turning curiously around. “You all can fly and lift things the humans of my world never could imagine, but all of your buildings are only a couple stories tall. Even back on Earth, we had towers hundreds of stories tall. Why is that?”
“Oh, that's simple. They're easier to rebuild, and don't cause nearly as much damage if they're destroyed.” he says easily. “After the first ti-, no, after the second time New Salda was besieged. First time the Covenant invaded, they changed how the buildings are built during the rebuild. So, when the siege happened, it took only a couple months to rebuild. Hell, this city took only a month for one crew with my four youngest helping them to build from complete scratch.”
“From scratch? Wow, that's... Impressive.” you say, genuinely surprised. But, as you think over it a moment, it makes sense. If you had had another dozen of you during the cleanup after the Androids, rebuilding the cities and clearing away the damage, it would have gone exponentially faster.
“Yeah, we all helped build it!” Maz, the younger boy says, puffing out his chest with his little fists on his hips. “From the dirt up!”
“And most of us didn't break the pipes!” Kayle, the older of the girls says, the twins immediately going at each other once more. Trying to grapple and force the other to submit. You turn and laugh, but then another building with a short line of people coming out from the door catches your eye.
“Hey, what's that?” you ask, pointing towards it. Your grandfather, seeing you point turns, then smiles a bit fondly.
“Oh, that one? That's the restaurant those two, ahh, what are their names again?” Karn, your massive grandfather ponders a moment. “Two of Silver's students opened up their own restaurant as the city was established, wanting to move on from being apprentices. They're doing quite well for themselves, perhaps we'll go over there next?”
But as you're about to answer your stomach does for you, the mere mention of food causing your stomach to growl. To which everyone freezes, even the two young ones mid-brawl as they all turn towards you. Embarrassed, you feel your face heating up, but before you can say anything Karn just laughs, patting you on the back.
“I'm sorry, been rambling on and on, didn't even ask if you were hungry. C'mon, let's go.” he says, everyone agreeing as you all make your way towards the building. And surrounded by family, family you'd never even known you had, for the first time in a long time, you truly feel it. You finally feel like you are...
