In front of the two riders was a hunchbacked beast that walked apelike on bony arms, and at the end of its bony arms were bony claws like the hands of a man. It was covered in scales and from its back sprouted a pair of wide leathery wings. It wore an iron helm with a grate like prison bars, and the beast was leashed to one of the riders by a chain that dragged along the road.
"What is it?" whispered Wilhelm to Petrit.
"I have never seen such a thing," Petrit whispered. "Nothing I fought in the great war ever looked so haphazard!"
