You could use and adapt free maps and mods from say
lvlworld.com as the basis of exploration (here are a few I have saved, I keep them because the art style just looks so different from the BROWN CYBERGOTH floating space castle or grey flesh industrial killing box etc, default of q3a etc, apologies should probably have turned off the weapon and HUD). I was briefly very tempted to run a quake 3 quest starting with the process of installing the game and fiddling with console commands and configs hehe before moving in-game. The main issue is that the familiar competitive maps eg aerowalk or the cpma ones which deliver the best and most intense quake 3 gameplay are usually not the graphically pretty or artistic ones (the superfun competitive maps are just boxes and angles and ramps and corners)
Quake 3 also had some interesting lore in the background (I mentioned before on qst how I have poured through all the bot chat text scripts - not many people know that fantasy author RA Salvatore wrote huge amounts of dialogue for the bots, yes you can flirt with them and they respond tee hee hee) There was the idea of the Vadrigar (?) and planeswalking / many worlds across dimensions, as the anon mentioned
