>>5436845Corrine scoffs. “Everything you’ve gone on about today is scary enough, we don’t need your ghost stories on top of that. Just make sure you know where you’re going tomorrow.”
That night, you find yourself in the room Anemone had lent out to you. Alongside you is Corrine, as well as Diana and Shelley, who have joined you. The room is sparce, with nothing but a single bed and a table sporting a lit candle. The door is closed, but you can see a faint light underneath the door’s frame. Anemone, hard at work reading the log you gave her.
“This seems like a fine situation you’ve gotten us into, Blair.” Shelley says. “Care to explain just what this has all been about?”
“What’s the big deal? We’ve fought Crusaders before. This wasn’t exactly a new experience.” Corrine says. Your Lieutenant has taken the entire bed for herself, leaving the three of you sitting cross-legged on the hard wooden floor.
“Yes, but we’ve always been paid for that. You said our employer was anonymous but look around you. There’s nothing valuable in this village. This little excursion was paid for by our own treasury. Moreover, we’re in the middle of nowhere, defending a village no one’s ever heard of, that’s populated entirely of what one could charitably call ‘freaks’, from Demonic Beasts and Crusaders that shouldn’t even be here.” She sighs. “I’ve been around longer than both of you girls. I know well enough when the hornet’s nest has been kicked. Usually, it’s not too much longer until the bandits or mercenaries I’ve found myself attached to end up dead. So, who did we piss off?”
“Shelley’s being dramatic.” Diana says. “Blair said it wasn’t a big deal, and I trust her. Right, Blair?” The girl looks as you with wide eyes. They remind you of Beathan’s when you dangle a treat in front of him.
“All I’m saying is I’m not the only one who’s curious to know what’s going on out here. The Blackwings trust you to a fault, Blair. You’ve been an honest Commander, and more importantly, you deliver results. But if we’re biting off more than we can chew, we should at least know what we’re up against.”
